Angela’s Ashes tells the story of the McCourt family from their arrival in America until their return to Ireland after Malachy Sr. has lost all of the money that he inherited because he got drunk and gambled it away on “the horses” (horses that run races). Angela decides to leave her husband because he has squandered all of his money and is not providing for the family.

Angela travels back to Ireland by herself with all four children, leaving Malachy Sr. behind in New York City where he has gotten a job working on the docks. Angela returns to her father’s home in Limerick, Ireland only to find that it had been destroyed by British soldiers during “the Troubles” (religious wars between Roman Catholics and Protestants).

Angela begins having children immediately upon arriving in Limerick because she believes that this will help Angela support herself while Frank prostitutes himself on the streets for loose change after school so that Angela has enough food to feed her starving children each day. The youngest McCourt child, Alphie dies when he falls into an open sewer and Angela blames herself because she had been so busy trying to feed all of her children that she could not save him.

Angela is forced to place a public notice in the local newspaper when Malachy Sr. resurfaces in Angela’s life, asking for Angela and their children to come back home with him to New York City where he has secured employment as a longshoreman, but Angela refuses to return with Malachy until Angela can get Frank out of jail (he was arrested for fighting).
