Artificial Intelligence Argumentative Analysis Essay

A multitude of different movies portrays Artificial Intelligence (AI) as something to be feared; an entity that would be the demise of humanity. Despite what these movies portray, it is up for dispute whether Al is a threat to humanity. Al is becoming more commonplace and more advanced everyday both in the real and virtual world. Multiple different Al entities have previously malfunctioned and caused issues. A multitude of groups of individuals feels that restrictions should be placed on Al entities, while others believe that Al poses no threat to any individual.

Whether or not, Al is a threat is still up to question. Al is commonly attributed to movies such as Terminator or Space Oddity. As a result, when the future of Al is ever debated, these movies are crossed referenced as an example of an Al going rogue. The truth is that Al lacks the ability to reason; therefore, it will not have any reason to turn against humanity. IBM’s Watson exemplifies this inability to reason. IBM’s Watson is an Al unit that has nearly mastered Jeopardy. Despite this, because of IBM’s Watson inability to reason, it fails to completely understand the human language.

Without the ability to reason, IBM’s Watson is unable to make complex decisions such as understanding that it even exist or whether or not humans pose a threat to its existence; therefore, making the Al not dangerous at all. In any case, Al has yet to become a threat to humanity, yet. Furthermore, people believe that because all Al technology is used for business or government purposes; that if Al was to gain the ability to reason, that we would stand in the way of its goals and it would attempt to annihilate us.

However, not all uses for Al involve business or government purposes; some serve the purpose of being a quotes from genuine companion. Pepper is a Japanese humanoid robot which its only goal is to be a day-to-day genuine companion. Taking into consideration that Pepper’s sole purpose is to be affectionate , we would not stand in the way of its goals; therefore, it would have no reason to go rogue. Even if it had a grudge against humanity, it would not be able to do any harm. In essence, there is seemingly no threat of an Al such as Pepper for turning against humanity.

As an author for the company Venture Beat, Dean Takahashi would be considered a credible source of information. Despite being the author of the article from Venture Beat, Dean Takahashi provides a multitude of qualities that make the article credible. Dean Takahashi in his article uses various quote employees at IBM who worked on Watson. This would make Dean Takahashi’s article seem more credible as he is directly quoting from the source. Additionally, Dean Takahashi includes a video of an IBM researcher explaining how Watson works. This allots additionally credibility as it makes the information seem legit.

Dean Takahashi is not the only credible source; Aldebaran also proves itself as an absolutely credible source. Aldebaran is the Japanese Engineering company behind the development of Pepper. As a result; this would make the document a primary source which greatly increases the credibility of this document. Regardless, it cannot be argued that neither Dean Takahashi nor Aldebaran, have vested interest, increasing their credibility and strengthening their claims. Somewhat similarly, people also believe that an Al would be able to hack into the government computers extremely easily.

This is not true as this can be portrayed by the WPA 2 or Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 is an extremely powerful encryption method used in wireless networks. WPA 2 has yet to be compromised by hackers to this day. Many individual and Al entities have tried to crack WPA2 code, but with no success. The WPA 2 encryption method has been out for about eight years now and is the most secure encryption for Wi-Fi . In essence, not even a super intelligent Al would be able to crack the encryption, such as WPA 2; protecting our networks from a non-threatening Al.

In addition to WPA2 being a very strong encryption method, there is another form of encryption for files that any Al would be unable to crack; Denuvo. Denuvo is an anti-tampering encryption technology used to protect video games from pirating. This technology has so far proved itself to be reliable because not a single hacker has ever been able to get past Denuvo encryption technology. From all of this information, it can be concluded that strong encryption is an extremely tough obstacle for an Al to crack, and whether or not these methods of encryption will be cracked is still up for question.

As Lincoln Spector is a writer for the website, PC World, this instantaneously gives the article a trustable credibility as PC World is a known and trusted source of information. Additionally, Lincoln Spector uses in-depth detail in his article about WPA 2. However, this document does have a flaw as no information or data contained in the document are sourced. This would force readers to simply rely on the fact that this information comes from a trusted source. This in return can make the credibility and strength of the document questionable. Despite these flaws, Lincoln Spector’s credibility is plausible.

Additionally, Patrick Klepek is another credible source of information; Patrick Klepek is a writer from Kotaku- a wellknown company. As a result of this, the content seems more believable and credible. In addition, Patrick Klepek also uses various quotes and multiple different sources. As a result, these things raise the strength and credibility of the argument. Patrick Klepek even includes a video to explain how Denuvo works. Although no document is flawless, there is little statistical data included. In consequence of this, the document loses minor credibility.

To conclude, both documents can be seen as credible sources. While movies may portray an Al exaggeratedly turning against humanity, are they necessarily wrong? Humanity may well be a threat to an Al’s existence as we often have the need to control everything. A good example of this was Microsoft’s recently released twitter Al nicknamed “Tay”. Tay’s mission was to learn from the internet and as a result, this Al had to be taken down as its negative lash out on others. Tay, after hours of release, started saying very offensive statements and partly became a Nazi Al. This shows that not all Al is protected from corruption.

In addition to this, there is an event called “The International Join Conference on Al” that occurs every year. Over 17,080 scientist and tech personals attended and sign a document addressing the concerns of an Al potentially turning against us. Now these people were just any scientist and such, people like Bill Gates and Steven Hawking are deeply concerned about an Al turning against us. If these ingenious individuals are deeply concerned about Al, why aren’t we? In essence, it has been made clear that Al does have the potential to turn against humanity, so why should we sit here and do nothing about it?

When analyzing the document of Ryan Matthew Pierson, this document has proven its credibility through a multitude of methods. Ryan Matthew Pierson in his document includes pictures of direct tweets from Tay as evidence of her corruption. This would greatly increase his credibility as it takes directly from the source- something that is looked up upon. In addition to this, Ryan Matthew Pierson also includes a multitude of different sources for his information. Of course, no document is perfect: one downside to this document is the lack of quotes from Microsoft employees.

This can be seen as a weakness and therefore, the document would lose strength and credibility. Despite this, the next document is incredibly strong. This document comes directly from the source, The International loin Conference on Al. This would greatly increase the credibility of the document as there is no doubt that it is legit. However, this document is greatly one sided and never takes into consideration that maybe it is not the Al that will be the threat, perhaps it could be hackers that use it for malicious purposes. Initially, many believe that strong encryption can never be racked; unfortunately, this is not the case.

Even the strongest encryption will eventually be cracked; this is evident from multiple times our own government’s encryptions have been cracked. Years ago, there was a virus named agent. btz that broke into the U. S. government’s military systems and anomalously sent out classified data to an unknown source. This virus was one of the worst virus intrusions the military has ever seen. It is evident that not all systems are safe forever, and eventually, the code will be cracked. In addition to this, the Russian government was hacked by Chinese hackers.

These Chinese hackers breached through the encryption placed by the Russians and stole data from the military compartment. Imagine if a rogue Al learned how to do this, no one would be safe! To conclude, Al has the potential of being an extremely dangerous threat to humanity- a threat that would not like to be foreseen. Both the document and the YouTube video can be tagged as trusted, strong, and most importantly credible for their efforts. The author behind the document, John P. , works for Tech News World, a company with a trusted reputation.

Straight off the back, this makes the document already strong and credible. John P. also uses varies different quotes to support his argument; therefore, making it stronger. In spite of this, John P. fails to credit the sources of the quotes; making the document less credible. Not only is this document overall credible, but also the YouTube video created by Mathew Patrick. Mathew Patrick is a well-known theorist on YouTube and is considered a reliable source. One of the strongest qualities that Mathew Patrick offers is that he sources all data included in the video.

This ultimately, substantially increases the credibility of the video due to the fact that it is not often that videos or documents source all of their data. In the end, both documents have great credibility and strength in their arguments. From a personal perspective, any arguments regarding future developments in Al and whether or not, it is a real threat, is complex in nature since this cannot be completely predicted. In any case, it may be concluded that while in some instances, such as Tay, seem to call for Al to be an actual threat to humanity’s existence; this should not prevent Al from reaching its full controlled potential.

Although, some restrictions should be in place for Al; ultimately, it will be humanity’s fault for creating its own demise. Additional viewpoints will need to be taken into consideration as time passes due to the technology industry’s nature of extremely fast development and improvements. While the debate regarding Al being a threat to humanity or not undeniably continue, this is needed as technology constantly changes and new developments are made.
