We are becoming slaves of our own creation. Nowadays the internet has become something indispensable. It has changed the way we communicate and interact by transforming our social lives, changing the way we learn, and created cyber bullying as an additional negative intention. People don’t socialize anymore as before. We don’t think nor read critically anymore which is making us more stupid. The internet was created to help us positively but we turned the it into a negative source. “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots. ” Albert Einstein.
The internet is so important to us, that we can’t live one day without it. We don’t socialize anymore as before. Statistically from 100 people in a party almost 60 people are using their phones or taking pictures but never interacting with each other. Everything has changed. We prefer to have media conversations than one on one conversations. When we don’t have any source available to make a media conversation it’s difficult for us to develop one on one conversations. This can be seen in families too, because in this century families do not sit down on a table to eat together, and when they do, someone is on their phones, tablet or computer.
Furthermore, when we are out with friends or families we tend to be more aware of our phones than the person next to us. The internet is so indispensable nowadays that when our phones are off the first thing we do is look for a charger instead of looking for any other way to have fun. It was created with a positive purpose of making our lives easier but it has created cyber bullying as an additional negative intention, taking with it innocent people’s lives. This is a major problem, because instead of helping us, is destroying us.
The ironic part is that we see the problem but we don’t do anything about it, since we are too busy searching on the internet to satisfy our personal needs. There have been several suicides because of cyber bullying. Instead of confronting the problem we prefer to write it on comments, blogs, etc. This problem that we are facing now also involves many other factors. For instance, if we see a picture in any social media of someone cutting their wrist, the first thing we do is share, or comment negative thoughts instead of trying to find a way to help the person.
We are so used to share everything on the social media, that we forget how that could affect others. Before posting or sharing something about someone we should consider the idea of cyber bullying and how that person can react. It’s a fact, nowadays we don’t think nor read critically anymore. We rely so much on the internet that, when we need information we don’t critically think or search further. Instead, we look for some information; we read it and that’s it. But we don’t analyze the information.
Surfing the internet has made everything easy for us. Thus, when we want to read something we prefer to search on the internet, than read a hard copy, since we know the internet would make it shorter for us. From a whole article we only read the surface, we don’t really take the time to investigate or search the words we don’t understand and their meanings. We only read what we think it’s important and we don’t think about it thoughtfully. Back in the days our libraries used to be full and people used to be smarter.
Nowadays, is a whole different story, we do go to libraries but most of us go to use one of their public computers. Once again to take the easy way. To conclude, the internet is a great source to take good advantage of it, but if we continue the way we are now we will become dummies like Albert Einstein said a generation of idiots. It has isolated us more, because we do not socialize anymore as we used to before the advance of technology . We have become less interesting and developing one on one conversations is extinguishing.
Can’t leave aside, cyber bullying, which plays a huge role on the way we communicate and interact. Because of it, we prefer to solve our problems via social media rather than one on one conversations, which expands the problem because other people in the social media become informed of the problem. Last but not least, we don’t think nor read deeply as we used to, because when we are searching, what we are doing is looking at the surface of any information. We don’t really take the time to read a book and when we do, we don’t tend to finish it.
