Naomi Wolf later wrote about beauty and how it is used to keep women in their place.
She argued that women should be able to celebrate their beauty without being shamed. Women have come a long way since then, but there is still more work to be done. She believes that women need an income and a space to be creative in order to escape the societal norms that hinder them. Naomi Wolf also believes in the importance of economic independence for women, but from a different perspective.
In her text The Beauty Myth, Wolf argues that the beauty industry is keeping women from becoming financially independent. She claims that due to male pomposity, society expects conventional lives from women, which often do not include work outside the home. Furthermore, Wolf argues that the obsession with physical appearance distracts women from more important pursuits. Lastly, Wolf believes that beauty is diverse and that the ideal of one perfect type of beauty is damaging to both women and society as a whole.
Both Woolf and Wolf make valid points about the importance of economics in relation to feminism. Woolf’s idea that women need money and their own space echoes throughout history and is still relevant today. Women have long been financially reliant on men. Anything in a woman’s hands was passed to her father or spouse. Women have continued to stay at home raising their children, cleaning house, and doing other domestic chores. Of course, there have been women who worked outside the home; however, Woolf believes that such work is slavery. Not much money was generated, and few jobs were available to ladies.
Wolf believes that women have been psychologically dependent on men. Women have internalized the message that they are not as good as men and that their worth comes from the approval of men. They are taught to be submissive and to put others first.
Feminists believe that both economic and psychological dependence are harmful to women. They want to see women achieve equality with men both in the home and in the workplace. This can only happen if women have access to the same education, jobs, and pay as men. Feminists also work to end violence against women and to change societal attitudes about what is “feminine” and “masculine.”
One may wonder why women have been the ones to suffer. Why has it been men who have depended on women, and not vice versa? Why haven’t women been able to grow and develop in the same way as males? The answer is that males exaggerate their importance.
According to Woolf, women have been regarded as mirrors for centuries. “Women have served all these years as looking glasses that possess the mystical and delicious ability of reflecting a man’s shape twice its normal size,” (Woolf 346). Men believe themselves to be superior since they perceive women to be inferior. If a woman were to defy the power of the looking glass and assert herself, men wouldn’t currently feel so dominant.
Naomi Wolf talks about this in her book, The Beauty Myth. “We know now that the beauty myth is not about women at all. It is about men, and how they see women,” (Wolf 9). Wolf points out that throughout history, it has always been up to men to define what beauty is. Women have not had a say in the matter.
As a result of the patriarchy, women have always been oppressed by men. And while feminism has brought some change over the years, there’s still a long way to go before we reach total equality between the sexes. In Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own, she discusses the many ways in which women have been held back due to their gender.
For instance, women have been denied education and the opportunity to develop their talents and skills. They’ve also been forced to do unpaid labor, both inside and outside of the home. Woolf argues that in order for women to achieve true equality with men, they need financial independence and the freedom to express themselves artistically.
Sadly, many women are still not treated equally to men today. In many parts of the world, they’re paid less for doing the same job, they’re not allowed to own property or make decisions about their own lives, and they’re at risk of violence and abuse. But there are a growing number of feminists who are working hard to change all that. And slowly but surely, progress is being made.
