Lee Krasner Right Bird Left Analysis

Have you ever had a painting that really spoke to you? When I visited the David Owsley Art Museum there was one painting in particular that stuck out to me, it was: Right Bird Left by Lee Krasner. Tis painting made me feel happy and gave me a lot of energy during the time I was at the museum. It caught the attention of my eye by using several different visual elements to depict an abstract representation art piece. Along with that it used principle of designs to help the visual elements play out and work in the painting so that things can be depicted to the human eye correctly.

This piece might have looked like bird feathers but it used many different techniques to give me a bigger underlying meaning behind a such complex painting. This piece was one of the first to the start of me learning how to understand and appreciated art work for what it is truly worth. The painting called Right Bird Left, made me feel extremely happy. The bright colors are what drawled me over to start looking at the painting. I never would have gone to this picture if it was not for how big and how bright the colors are.

I loved standing there looking at the panting and admiring all of the strikes of the brushes and the textures that are displaced in the different areas of the painting. I admire all of the hard work that was taken into place to get this painting to look the way it did. This painting not only made me happy, but it gave me a lot of energy. The colors communicate a form of energy that would normally go unnoticed if it was a painting that was darker colors. One part of the painting that I focused in on was there is a little section on the right side of Right Bird Left, that is a brownish yellow shade and it is not used anywhere else.

It is confusing to me to see them use a color that is very contrasting to all of the colors that are used throughout the rest of the picture. The colors are one of the main things that attracted me to want to study this picture more. The brightness of the picture made me think of happiness and that is what I was looking for in the painting I described. When I was at the museum I wrote down that this painting reminded me of a peacock. The reason I got this impression was because the colors and the way the feathers are created to look.

I thought that this painting was clearly proportioned because all of the “feathers” are about the same size. Another thing in this painting that caught my eye when I was first looking at it was at the top left there is a shape that kind of looks like a circle, but it is no where else in the painting. This had me questioning this painting because it has more unique and different things on the left hand side. I got the vibe that it was trying to communicate something through the things being on the left side.

This painting not only brings me joy, but it makes me feel like it was something that was a little chaotic. The painting in some areas seems like it has nothing to do with anything, but that it is just depicting different shapes that are supposed to mean something. I got the feeling that the artist is trying to hide something in an area the way that birds try to stay hidden during certain time of their existence. These thoughts are all that came to my mind when I was at the art museum before I knew some of the things that we have talked about in art class.

Right Bird Left recreated in words is something that is bright and joyful. The words that I would use to describe this painting are things that would make me feel happy, because when I see this painting it brings a smile to my face. The painting is set to depict what ever your own individual eye wants to interpret. Personally, I see a lot of bird feathers that have came together to make a certain piece. Something else I see is masquerade masks. I get the feeling that it was a stack of masks that were put in a pile and Lee Krasner decided to try and make something out of these scrambled accessories.

I think that Krasner was not having a particular meaning to come from this picture because of the variety of things that are going on. He probably wanted to create a painting that people could interpret what ever they wanted from the piece. This artwork was an abstract representational painting. The reason it is this type of painting is because even though it might look like it could be non-representational, there are feathers that can be depicted as being in this painting. It has a low degree of verisimilitude so it is easy to understand why it is an abstract representational painting.

In Right Bird Left, you can see the brush strokes and the way Krasner was trying to depict a texture throughout the painting. The colors could be used to represent actual feathers, but many times birds do not look that bright unless it is a parrot and it is not supposed to be depicting that from what I am interpreting from this painting. The subject matter of this painting is still to focus on the birds but there is more behind just that simple thought. The subject of the birds is used to create a bigger meaning behind this painting.

Right Bird Left is a painting that primarily used four of the visual elements to show and display a different meaning for the painting. This is a painting that used implied texture. This was done by the way the artist worked on the brush strokes. The strokes created an idea that there were textures that were actually on the the painting even though they were not there. I think that it was good that Krasner made the strokes look different with the brush and change the way it looked because it gives the painting a little more realistic feeling.

The feathers do not look completely real but the texturing give it a better feeling and meaning of them being true feathers. It also used lines to create from and shape. The way the painting was structure allowed for different lines to create the shape that was being created. I believe that these two visual elements worked together to give the painting the feeling of having actual feather throughout the picture. In the painting, color was the visual element that stood out to me the most.

This element was used to make the picture stand out more than it would have if it were normal colors were used to represent the feathers. The color was what made the picture seem intriguing to me and gave it a bigger meaning. These four visual elements are used to depict the underlying message behind this painting. The principles of design that were used in the painting focused on many different designs. The first one that stood out to be was everything in the painting was balanced fairly well. The colors and shapes are placed proportionately throughout the painting so that you are not too overwhelm by it all.

It places the colors evenly throughout the picture to make sure the colors do not combine to form a bigger amount and one color do not dominate a certain area of the painting. Right Bird Left, was a painting that used unity and variety to create an extremely interesting piece of art. The unity is achieved by the shaped be composed to make me know that the objects, or feathers, truly belong together. Variety is used in this picture because it depicts a bunch of different colors to create the shapes so that you are not bored or so you do not lose interest.

Another principle of design is repetition and rhythm that was conveyed in this piece of art. The colors and shapes of the feathers were repeated all throughout the painting to give you a sense of all the chaotic things that happen in a forest, which is similar to the craziness that goes on in our lives. Rhythm is a combination of these shapes but there are different types of variations that are taken into place. There is a beat of loudness conveyed through this rhythm. These are all of the principles of designs that I found in the painting Right Bird Left when I looked deeper into the meaning.

The art work that I chose, Right Bird Left, is a piece of artwork that I did not know how to fully interpret it at first. Once I looked at all of the thoughts that I had come to mind and the way the picture was structured I believe there is a bigger underlying meaning for this picture. I think this picture wants me to see what it means to be different. I get this meaning from this painting because the left side is different from the rest. All of the other colors are pretty evenly spaced and used the same amount of times, but the brownish yellow is used in one section.

I believe his title of the paining has the word “Left” as the last word because it wants you to understand that there is something unique about the left side. So Krasner wants people to know it is perfectly fine to be different and be yourself, because you can still fit in with the rest of the crowd even if your “feathers” are a different color than everyone else’s. Be that person who wants to always step out of the box and see what is waiting for you on the outside, not just what is on the inside.

I also found a deeper meaning of the painting showing how crazy that life can actually be. There is always going to be a lot of things going on in people’s lives and that is what this painting depicted through all of the different strokes and colors that were very bright. The colors are also used to show that everything is going to be good in the long run because even though there is going to be craziness, the colors gave me a sense of joy and happiness and an understanding that it is all going to be good in the long run.

The David Owsley Art Museum was something new for me, but I truly enjoyed finding a piece of artwork that stood out to me. I enjoyed the ability to find a piece of work that had more meaning to me than I would have ever found out first. The content of the painting helped me to gain a new understanding of what it is like to truly appreciate a piece of artwork. The artist, Lee Krasner spent a lot of time on this painting and it is truly evident.

I was able to find meaning by interpreting things in the artwork, like the visual elements and the principle of designs that were used throughout the picture. I never would have expected for me to be able to draw something out of a picture that looked like a bunch of random feathers but it gave me a great message of do not be afraid to be different. You not always have to be like everyone else that you surround yourself with and that I must be my own unique individual.
