Nora In A Doll’s House Essay

My character of choice is Nora, from Isben’s A Doll House. My descriptions are pre her life changing revelations (since her change is so drastic, and we don’t know who she becomes). Additionally, I thought it would be more fun as she is very light hearted and full of cheer as her previous self. Nora would go to the bookstore as she enjoys the excitement of finally being free from (mainly her) debt. She’s thrilled to look at every book, whether it is children’s, adventure or romance. She quickly goes from table to table looking at all the best sellers.

Nora delightfully slips a couple of children’s books into her basket and moves on. She lifts every book and judges each by their cover. Nora finds a book that is simply delightful and starts to thumb through the romance novel hoping to catch a glimpse of a juicy detail of the story line. She quietly giggles to herself about the joys which are ahead of her. Nora then pulls the book close to her chest, near her heart and takes a deep breath. She thinks of Torvald and smiles a quaint smile, then puts the book back down. Thinking that he will call her his “song bird” and that she shouldn’t be spending the money.

Nora sifts through her closet, thinking of what she looks and feels best in. What will Torvald ask her to dance for him in? She picks out two dresses and lays them out on the bed. She stares at each trying to picture her playful day. She lifts the first up to her body, turns and looks at herself in the mirror. With one hand on her hip and her other at the thigh of the dress, she spreads it over her legs as she shifts her hips from left to right in a playful manner. She sets the dress down and puts the second one up to her body. Finally she picks up both dresses and shifts them back and forth in front of the mirror.

Once she finally decides, she throws the other onto the bed and twirls around holding the dress of choice up to her, smiling with excitement. When she hears Torvald in the other room coming her way, she giggles with anticipation. Nora picks up the other dresses and quickly hangs them back in the closet. She shuts the closet door behind her and leans on the doors with her arms spread wide across them. Nora doesn’t shop for cereal, as that is what the house staff takes care of. She does however, like to sneak a sweet treat every so often. Nora shops at outdoor malls for her children’s and Torvald’s Christmas gifts.

Along the way she spots a children’s candy store. Of course she thinks of the children and how much they too would delight in having a bit of candy on Christmas morning. She walks casually, very nonchalant and unsuspecting. As she gets to the store, she swings open the door and causally turns around backwards (to make sure no one suspects anything) and backs slowly into the store. Once inside she peruses each aisle, putting a thing here and there in her bag for the children. Nora keeps in mind that Torvald believes sweets rot teeth so she gets very little. Nora takes great pleasure in her little secrets.

She gets to the packaged candy like, Snickers, Skittles and Twix. She takes her time in deciding which will be her secret pleasure today. Nora stops and decides on a bag of assorted Jelly Belly’s. They are easy to hide and they are sweet as can be. With each one, Nora gets a little bit of mystery, intrigue and thrill from which flavor she’ll get. She slips it into her bag and goes to check out. Nora makes sure to point out to the cashier how her children love Jelly Belly’s, but are most limited in how much they are allowed to eat as candy rots teeth of course.

Nora stares up at the movie boards as all her decisions, although seemingly sporadic and unplanned, are quite thought out. As she continues to look at the movie board, she fixates her eyes on one movie in particular. She’s sure that is the movie she’s wanting to see. She marches up to the ticket stand and declares “One for The Princess Bride! ” As the ticket counter is ringing her up she asks “doesn’t it just make your heart soar thinking about adventure all in the name of true love? ” The ticket teller, a young twenty-something boy with a face full of acne, who could barely dream of love, replies with little enthusiasm “Yeah, sure lady.

He hands her the tickets and Nora takes them and spins away saying “It’s all so wondrous! ” She walks into the theater building. Since she’s alone she heads to the concession stand, but limits herself to a small treat and a small unbuttered popcorn. Nora can have nothing to drink as she must watch her girlish figure. What would people think if she were seen with anything more than that? She heads to the middle of the theater and sits in the very middle row. As other people come in, she comments to them about her excitement to watch the movie as it seems full of adventure and hopeless romance.
