It was a very pleasant evening and I was at soccer practice at the South Barrington turf soccer fields. I loved to play soccer and I took it really seriously. Everything I do I go all out. There was no such thing as a second gear for me, I would always go 110 percent. When I was on the field, I could be looked at as a violent person and I would constantly get carded for rough play. During some of our matches I struck so much fear in my opponents they were afraid to guard me.
Our practice was about halfway through and our coach told us he was going to teach us a new move. We all swarmed him like angry bees. Everyone on our team loved to learn new moves and try them out. We were all very excited for this new move and we were all buzzing around. When our coach told us the new move was called a death cut, we all became even more excited to try it out. The death cut is a move that is used when chasing after a 50/50 ball with the opposing team pursuing, you quickly cut in front of the opposing player with the intention of drawing a foul. Our coach demonstrated step by step to perform a safe and effective death cut. He started to strongly suggest that we only go half speed. The last thing he wanted was for anyone to get hurt. After his very detailed instructions, the other players on my team began to practice this new move on…
I still remember his exact words to this day. He said, “It has been determined that Sean has broken his collarbone and will be out for the remainder of the season.” The world stopped around me as his words sunk into me like water sinking into a sponge. Our practice got back going and I was definitely not the same player I used to be earlier in the practice. I was not aggressive at all and I was completely not thinking about the game of soccer. All I could think about was my lack of responsibility of going all out, and that it cost my friend a broken…
