In stories, the setting is influential to characters who face unique situations and environments. Both “The Story of Keesh” and “Life of Pi” contain characters who have hope, and perform brave and skillful actions that provide them the means to survive and live in an extreme environment. The characters portrayed in “The Story Of Keesh” and in Life Of Pi demonstrate such characteristics. Pi never gives up on hope which helps him to survive in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Hope inspires the will to survive in an extreme environment.

As he finds supplies he counts out the days he has to survive with that this gives he hope to live on another day. He reach the realization that there is hope. In A moment of clarity, Pi come to the conclusion that the lifeboat has to be supplied with essential replenishments need to survive. As Pi says to himself, “The divining rod in my mind dipped sharply and a spring gused water when I remembered that I was on a genuine, regulation lifeboat and such a lifeboat has surely outfitted with supplies” (Martel 81).

In the process of him calculating the number of days he has to survive Pi regains hope. At the time that this occurred, Pi calculated “I had eaten one; there were thirty-one left. According to the instructions, each 500-gram carton was supposed to last one survivor three days. That meant I had food rations to last me— 31 x 3—93 days! The instructions also suggested survivors restrict themselves to half a liter of water every twenty-four hours. I counted the cans of water. There were 124. Each contained half a liter.

So I had water rations to last me 124 days” (Martel 91). When the water flowed through his system the feeling of water grasping his throat giving him the moral that water was a symbol represented as he said “Liquid is Life”. Which indeed, gave him hope that the water he received was another way of him living. As this moment transpires Pi lust of water is shown “My feelings can perhaps be imagined, but they can hardly be described. To the gurgling beat of my greedy throat, pure, delicious, beautiful, crystalline water flowed into my system.

Liquid life, it was. I drained that golden cup to the very last drop, sucking at the hole to catch any remaining moisture. I went, “Ahhhhhh! ” (Martel 88). The character portrayed in Life Of Pi demonstrate such characteristics as his surroundings gave him the ability to have hope, which allowed him to have the will to survive. In this story the character willness to survive in the rim of the polar sea is created when he performs brave and skillful actions. As he stands up to a group of elders the head of the village keesh displays his bravry.

As the villages spied on him to recover his doing of which he kills they said “But arrived at the spot, they found not only the kill, which they had doubted, but that Keesh had quartered the beasts in true hunter fashion, and removed the entrails” (London 66). he is skillful because he has been success in killing the meat that he shares with the villages and his mother.

The villages said “None the less, his success continued, and the less skillful hunters were often kept busy hauling in his meat. And in the division of it he was just. As his father had done before him, he saw to it that the least old woman and the last old man received a fair portion, keeping no more for himself than his needs required” (London 67). Also, he has a special way of killing his bear then other bear hunters. He uses a whale-bone a piece of blubber and fitted it over the whale-bone.

After that he put it outside where it freezes The bear swallows the little round ball, and the blubber melts, the whalebone sharp ends cut the bear from the inside, the bear gets sick, and when the bear is very sick, he kill him with a spear. The characters portrayed in “The Story Of Keesh” and in Life Of Pi demonstrate such characteristics as they are influenced by their situation and environments. Survival in extreme environments consists of having hope, bravery, and being skillful is what you need to survive.
