Analysis: Are There Absolute Moral Rules Essay

My Personal Good life is having a loving family because I am loved and have support, living because I get to experience/enjoy life, Having Jesus Christ in my life, traveling to new areas, sports is something I love watching and playing, learning new things, art, technology, sports and luxury cars, music, relaxing on a beach because it put my mind at ease where I could think clearly, walking is important for me because it’s in my nature to move and not be stationary which I love that I can move, exercising because I am able to train my mind and body to stay in shape and keeping myself healthy, having opportunities, getting my education, good movies, food, laughing and living in California. For Dalai Lama the good life is having compassion, love, community, spiritual religion and happiness. Dalai Lama believes that happiness is the purpose of life and every human wants happiness instead of suffering, therefore we should seek happiness in our life.

For compassion Dalai Lama believes that it is one of the strongest emotions an individual can achieve for themselves because it’s sometimes hard to have compassion for another human being, so if one does have compassion then they are able to maintain a positive attitude toward people and gain friendships which leads to a happy life style. In Chapter 1 Modern Society and the Quest for Human Happiness by Dalai Lama, he states that “The desire or inclination to be happy and to avoid suffering knows no boundaries. It is in our nature. As such, it needs no justification and is validated by the simple fact that we naturally and correctly want this”(p. 5). Basically it’s in our nature to be happy because we as humans face a task of making a happy life for ourselves and to avoid suffering at any cost.

For Ethics Dalai Lama states that it is a moral framework ased on universal instead of religion practices and for those whose conduct themselves are ethically positive, more happier and even more satisfied and that much of the unhappiness we as humans endure is actually of our own doing so, the goal is achieving happiness for every individual. One strength for Dalai Lama is Compassion because compassion has no emotional response therefore, having a compassionate attitude towards others does not change even if they are negative. One weakness for Dalai Lama is emotional because humans are emoti creatures where anything in life can happen in an instant and if our inner dimension is damaged then we cannot be cared for therefore we are unable to enjoy the sense of harmony and tranquility in life.

For Utilitarianism what constitutes the good life is decreasing suffering and increasing happiness, having a moral guide to find whether the actions are right by how much happiness each one produces and also all living creatures are included because they all can suffer. From chapter 7 The Utilitarianism Approach there is a story about a man named Matthew Donnelly a physicist who worked with X-ray been in contact with too much radiation exposure which he developed cancer, where he is in a lot of pain and didn’t want to go on living with this pain. In the way he wants to be put out of his misery is by asking his brothers to kill him for example ” Mr. Donnelly begged his three brothers to kill him. Two refused, but one did not.

The youngest brother, 36-year-old Harold Donnelly, carried a . 30-caliber pistol into the hospital and shot Matthew to death”(p. 99). Utilitarians would conclude that it was just because the unhappiness was greater than his happiness that made Matthew want to end his life due to the amount of pain he was in, and Utilitarians believes he should have the option of ending his life no matter the outcome as long it is for the greater good of decreasing his suffering. One strength for Utilitarianism is having the rule Utilitarianism create a universal standards than can be followed by everyone which can provide a clear guidance for those who are lost.

One weakness for Utilitarianism is that you could sacrifice the minority if the outcome bring a greater good in a number of people, which allow this horrible acts to be considered moral. For Kant what constitutes the good life is logic and reason, to tell the truth even if the context is negative, and morality is a matter of following rules that must be followed, adopting good principles of action freely and act on it freely and being rational. Kant believes that if people have both the virtue which is having the strength to resist bodily inclinations and happiness they could have a good life if they are doing what is right. In Chapter 9 “Are There Absolute Moral Rules?

Immanuel Kant expressed the “Categorical Imperative” by saying: “Act only according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law”(p. 124). He expressed that “Categorical Imperative” is to do what is right and thinking of an action, and if there are any rules to follow for the specific action that is equal to the maxim then you must consider if you would want the rule to be a universal law. One strength for Kant would be how his theories has helped shape our legal system and our sense of moral law because without it We would be a dysfunctional society with no rules. One weakness for Kant would be he don’t care about the consequences of our actions.

The way the Dalai Lama compare with my Good life is my religion because I am able to love, have compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony, which bring happiness to me. The way Kant contrast with my good life is how Kant believe it’s ok to kill someone only if they want to die due to the suffering and pain they are experiencing, where believe that only God decide whether an individual should stay or leave this earth and plus it’s a sin to murder, so me and Kant has very different views on one’s taking their life or another. Utilitarianism compare with my good life because he supports lesus and how we should treat others as you would want them to treat you, which I believe because I treat people with respect no matter what because I would want people to treat me in the same way.

The way I value my body is that I am my body so | take care of it by exercising to keep it healthy and my body makes me unique where no one else could shares it and, thus no one else has my experiences. The way I value my movement in my good life is how it motivate me to do things that makes me feel happy and whole where I am able to experiences life by being able to move my body to enjoy what life has in store for me. Tam more aligned with holism because I’m involving my body in the activity that I engage in by exercising to have a balance of keeping a healthy mind and body, so that I am able to train my body and mind for certain situation. For example from Kretchmar chapter 7 he states: “We do not educate for the life of the mind. We educate, train, and habituate for the life of the whole person”(p. 122).

Where from Kretchmar quote I am training my body and mind to become a whole person rather than training my mind and body separately. In furthermore, being able to experience the world through my own unique body and learning more about my body as it grows with me. For example from Dr. Beal powerpoint “Introduction to the metaphysics of the body fall 16” there is a section on how a Holistic view the body where it states:”You are your body, You experience the world through your body and express yourself through your body and You’re body makes you unique as no one else shares it and, thus, no one else has your experiences or perspectives”(Dr. Beal).

Overall, how my perspective from the body and movement from my good life could impact people when working with them to promote movement is listening to the client to show that I care and understanding their wants as well as their needs will allow me to connect and encourage my client mentally and physically. In also motivating my client to not let any setbacks stop them from doing the things they want to do and also finding the solutions by not trying to fix the environment or the behavior of my client, but the solution to change my client behavior where I could figure out what they love to do where, I could help the client promote healthy movement with their bodies and mind.
