Attitudes Vs Teamwork In Sports Essay

Attitudes vs Teamwork The Point University basketball team hasn’t won a game this year. Because of that I personally believe that is because of the lack of teamwork on the team and the selfish egos that the teamwork has. One bad ego on the team can hurt the whole season. When individuals do not have a deep understanding of themselves, how they behave and why they behave that way, they do great damage to themselves, others and the organization.

The best way I have found to define selfish behavior is: “When a person behaves or do what they want to do or behave the way I want to and it takes away from others or hurts the team that is selfish behavior. ” One bad apple can ruin the apple pie, just like on the team, one ego kills the team. Teams that often end up on the winning end of the score in team sports are those that work well together. Learning to cooperate with others towards a common goal in sports is what builds character, friendship and important life skills for players and coaches.

The friendships built within a team can last a lifetime for some players, and the journey of a team throughout a season is often memorable. You here countless times “there is no l in team”I believe if the team would see how selfish they were being then they would understand why they were losing so much. The personality is a blend of authenticity and ego. Our true nature expresses itself through them both, in varying proportions. Authentic personality is the true and unlimited aspect of our personality while ego personality is the inauthentic limited aspects of our personality. There are many parts that are ounded up in ego such as self-centered, repressed, greedy, fearful and critical.

A person with a selfish ego can ruin not only themselves but other people around them such as a basketball team. Due to selfishness egos, I believe Point University basketball team hasn’t won a game this year because of this. An ancient cliche states: “One bade apple can ruin the apple pie”. That one bad apple can ruin a whole team’s bond which can lead to a result of losing. Learning to cooperate with others in sports is what builds character in a person and also improves one communication level with his teammates.

I interview a couple people on the team to see if the agreed with me on the reason why they have not won a game these are the responds | got to my questions. I first asked the Point University Captain Mikal Rodgers “What do you think the reason is that the team is yet to gain a win this year. ” His respond was “I believe that it is due to the fact that we have yet to come together as a team and that there are some induvial who want to score all the point instead of making the extra pass to the open teammate. ” I think that the Mikal response was agree with my assumptions about why they haven’t won a game.

I also interviewed the team leading scorer Jonathan Manning he is also a team captain I asked him “What do you think the team needs to do to get back on track and win a game this year. ” His response was “I think it’s due to the fact that we have a lot of selfish teammates and they are the reason we cannot come together as a team and go out and go win a game as a TEAM. ” He went on to say “people need to know that there is no l in team but if you think tell those people that they will say there is a me in team those are selfish individuals.

I agree with both captains but as leaders I think they should have already had this issue fixed. I don’t think they understand what a Captain/Leader a definition of a leader must take into account leadership. A leader most of the time finds themselves in a position of authority but this position does not mean because they are good they have the best leadership. In fact, on many occasions we find people who are in the position of leader do not provide leadership at all. So, a leader being a position of authority must provide leadership.

This leadership must be able to crystallize the vision that needs to be achieved by the group of followers. A leader must give his people a sense of purpose, an objective to achieve, and to rally people towards this cause. That is the book definition of a leader what all that means I believe is that as a leader you should be able to tell your own team what we need to fix on the team from talking to the coach or to be one on one with one of your teammates. I don’t think it’s the captain fault I just believe if they could become better leaders they could help the team instead of just sitting back and allowing things to happen.

Some say big egos can be good on a team if you balance the right way on a team boundaries and a sense of self. But when it’s out of balance, your ego is what leads you to define yourself according to external qualities and circumstances, like your appearance, your house, or your job. The ego is what makes you feel superior when you strike a perfectly balanced Warrior III, or like Merrill, feel inferior because some poses are beyond your reach. The ego persuades you to identify yourself as a flawless hostess or superstar yoga teacher, or conversely, makes you feel that you don’t measure up in these areas. ISAACS, NORA).

But if you have more than one of those egos on one team that make the feel superior to everyone it can help the team because if they thing they can help the team then it can up there make the team as if they were superior to other teams and it will up our teams performance in the game. But also big egos can hurt a team in a negative way because some player think that are the best on the team and that no one else matters on the team but that one person the book definition of a bad ego is your conscious mind, the part of your identity that you consider your “self.

If you say someone has “a big ego,” then you are saying he is too full of himself. Poor ego, it gets such a bad rap, being so often confused with poor egos and all kinds of other nasty things, but strictly speaking it is only a psychological term popularized by Freud meaning the conscious mind, or the awareness of one’s own identity and existence. I just think that team has a lot of “big egos” on the team that is harming the team’s ability to win any type of game this year. Due to that I think there are many option that you can go about to fix this issue on the team.

One way I think the team could come to gather as a team is to sit down in a group and just talk about how teamwork could help them do better as a team. Because Paul Gaffney said this about team work in sports “Teamwork in sport presents a variety of special challenges and satisfactions. It requires an integration of talents and contributions from individual team members, which is a practical achievement, and it represents a shared pursuit, which is a moral achievement. In its best instances team sport allows members to transform individual interests into a common interest, and in the process discover of part of their own identities.

Teamwork is made intelligible by the collective pursuit of victory, but moral requirements importantly condition that activity. ” (Gaffney, Paul). I believe if the Point University Basketball team first understand the meaning of teamwork and how it can help them win games. There was one insistent of the team agreeing on one thing together. That day both the captains got together and said to the team what is one thing we are trying to accomplish as a team this year the whole team agreed and said the all want to win a conference campion chip or to get a ring.

I believe that was the only sign of teamwork that I’ve seen come from the team this year where they all came to gather as a team and said we are going to when a championship this year. I think teamwork is one of the best keys that the team needs to come together and help each other win rather than each time they lost a game one of our player would never take credit for the lose the just took the “non-team player” is to selfish to take credit for the lost they just blame it on the team.
