Divergent is a word that seems close to meaning and even sounding like the word different. Anthem is described as call for help or for one’s belief. Both of these words are perfect matches for the stories they tell. The similarities don’t stop there, nor do the differences. The movie Divergent and the book Anthem almost run parallel with a lot of things but with others it is a big difference. The book Anthem focuses on breaking conformity while Divergent steers more towards accepting that you are different. The government in Equality’s world is very controlling but also fragile. When Equality brings his invention to the house of the scholars, they reel back in fear but then also anger. This is because they can demand a lot of anything but if something happens and someone discovers a secret, the government can be overthrown with a lot of support. This type of discovery is what they fear most. The government is so afraid of any variation that they choose who goes together for unmentionable purposes. This just shows that any slight difference in the system can bring the entirety of Equality’s government. The government in Divergent is not as controlling as the one Equality has come to know and to grow up with. This is because they only suggest what faction one should go into but the individual ultimately has the choice to go into whatever faction they please. This shows it’s weakness of letting individuality exist when they want everyone the same or really close to the same.
