Elwyn Brooks White was known as an American writer. He geared his writings mostly to the younger age group. Elwyn Brooks White was born in Mount Vernon, New York in 1899. White began his career when he published ” A Winter Walk” in St. Nicholas magazine, he was only eleven years old. As a child, White always dreaded giving speeches in front of the class. E. B. White won many awards during his childhood years. Every time White won an award he was required to give a speech, but he was too embarrassed to get in front of an audience.
White would write out a speech and make someone else read it to the crowd. E. B. White was also had terrible allergies. Every summer the White family lived on the shores of Belgrade Lake because the pollen was nowhere in sight. E. B. White later became an Army Private and ended his services in 1918. He was educated at Cornell University and graduated in 1921. White knew he was born to be a writer after he graduated from college. He pursued his writing career and accepted a job with the New Yorker.
The New Yorker was a newly established magazine when White joined. While working their he met the love of his life, Katherine Sergeant. They later married in 1929. White worked at the New Yorker for eleven years. The biggest influence that kept pushing E. B. White to write such wonderful and elaborate stories was his farmhouse. In 1939 Elwyn and his wife moved to a farm in North Brooklin, Maine. White did not work for another publishing company in North Brooklin.
He moved their to get away from everything and focus strictly on his own writings. Whites stories and poems are describing the wonders of nature. For example, the poem “Once More To The Lake” talks about a father who takes his young son to a camp. The father spent many summers their when he was a kid and now his son is experiencing. White sets the scene as a very relaxing place. ” There were cottages sprinkled around the shores, and it was in farming country although the shores of the lake were quite heavily wooded.
White’s description of nature takes the reader on a peaceful journey, while tying in the main purpose of the story. White’s farm also inspired him to right the novel “Charlotte’s Web”, a story about the life of a pig living on a farm. The biggest quality that White has is the way he sets the scene. E. B. White is a great American poet. He has influenced many people to write. The technique that White uses to put the reader in the story is incredible. The farm he lived on was a big inspiration on him, which made him be the best writer he could possibly be.
