Esther is invited by Constantin to go see the United Nations. Esther is well aware that Buddy’s mother, Mrs.Willard, is behind this meeting. Buddy is a man who has been chasing after Esther for quite some time now. Although it started rough and seemed to end rough, Buddy is still after her. His mother, Mrs. Willard, is also very fond of Esther. During her college years, she had a crush on Buddy, and he would often play mind games with her. The two would also have issues agreeing on things due to their very different career paths (Buddy was training to be a doctor). This is yet another insight to Esther’s thoughts. Which Esther felt strongly about at the time due to the fact that she has an undenying love for poetry. Esther talks about how she read a story about a fig tree. The story talks about a Jewish man and a nun meeting under a tree. The next day they watch a chick hatch, and touch hands. The day after that the nun does not come back, but she puts a maid in her place. Esther relates this to her and Buddy’s relationship if married. If married, it would be a couple of the same religion watching a child being born. Esther does not think of it that simply though, and she thinks about all of the complications that would come with their relationship. I think that when Esther complicates things with Buddy, it is a way of protecting herself.
