Art Concepts are a way of explaining a story or design through music, film, pictures, clips, or paintings. in order to understand certain art developments and styles. There are many different art forms, but watching a film or looking at pictures helps determine which art style it is and possibly whom it is from. Artists who wanted to create something that moved them emotionally, and mentally develop Art. They also wanted the art to be presented and for viewers to feel how they do and for them to be known through their art style.
When one looks at a painting, just by the style the artist is recognized. There are also artists’ that like to interpret the original artists into their own work such as appropriation. Appropriation is an art concept where you take an image or film and you use the same background but use it in your own style and make a new image or film. Art is anything one desires it to be and being able to recognize certain art styles and artists within the painting, drawing, clip, film, music, or music video. George Melies, he was an amazing artist of magic and illusions.
He was a set designer; he used the Rococo art style in his set designs and he also implemented Industrial Art into his work. “Melies bought Robert Houdin’s theater in 1888; he learned and used many things from Houdin’s theater such as stop motion photography, double and multiple exposures, fadeout scenes, dissolving, trapdoors, and smoke bombs. ” (Soren, Np). Melies was also a director, producer, and actor. Melies was famous for his work, but became immensely known for his film Trip To The Moon that was produced in 1902. His set included significant features; aliens, clouds, a spaceship, and a shooting star.
The shooting star is very significant through the appropriation of all the films and video clips. The film is about astronauts making a plan to go to the moon, they build a spaceship, then they take “a trip to the moon”, where they have an occurrence with some creatures and then they have to fight them off while they get back to the spaceship and it ends with them getting back safely within the 80 days and everyone applauds them and throws a parade. Trip to the Moon was a silent film, but was later appropriated into a music video.
The music video that was used to appropriate Trip to the Moon is transcended into the music video Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins. The Smashing Pumpkins are an Alternative Rock Band. They have many music videos that portray their interest in alternative rock. Such as in the music video Tonight, Tonight they kept many of the same characteristics of the set by George Melies and transcended it into the music video and their own style, which seems to be a vintage look in the music video. They told a different story through the music video, but it had all of the same background.
For example, they kept the spaceship, the aliens, and the shooting star. They were able to have the same backgrounds, but change the story. The Smashing Pumpkins used the same background and their story seemed to be about an adventure with a significant other and in George Melies’s video it was about a “trip to the moon” but with a bunch of astronauts. The two people that were having an adventure used a spaceship, and they encountered the aliens and had to hit them with their umbrella and turn them into dust in order to escape from the aliens, which was also from Trip to the Moon.
The Smashing Pumpkins were able to appropriate features from George Melies’s film and use it in their music video and present their story but through the music form. The Smashing Pumpkins used their video to represent an adventure with a significant other, which was echoed from George Melies. Music and music videos are an amazing way of transforming one artist’s idea into their own art, which is something Katy Perry was able to depict. The video that was appropriated from The Smashing pumpkins is Wide Awake by Katy Perry. Katy Perry is a singer and songwriter of pop-rock music.
Katy Perry portrays her love for modern pop-rock music and performance by presenting it in such ways like in Wide Awake. Katy Perry performed a live music performance at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. The music video kept many of the same features such as the clouds, the shooting star, and the spaceship. Katy Perry’s story in her performance was similar to The Smashing Pumpkin’s music video because in Tonight, Tonight there are two people on an adventure into space and in The Wide Awake performance Katy Perry and a man are together on an adventure as well.
However, Katy Perry seems to be in a dream having an adventure. She kept a similar interest about taking an adventure with a significant other and transitioned it in her own art style, which is more of a modern look. There were many of the same set features such as the spaceship, and the shooting star that The Smashing Pumpkins used, and George Melies originally had. The spaceship appears in the beginning of the performance and then the shooting star is towards the middle of the performance and those clearly have a meaning of when the spaceship and the shooting star are placed in the performance.
Katy Perry used her performance to represent an adventure with someone, which was echoed from The Smashing Pumpkins. She was able to transcend her art of music into a live performance that illustrated similar ideas from The Smashing Pumpkins and George Melies. Appropriation is an art concept where you take an image or film and you use the same background but use in in your own style and make a new image or film. Art is anything one desires it to be and being able to recognize certain art styles and artists within the painting, drawing, clip, film, music, or music video.
The Smashing Pumpkins were able to portray a story about adventure using similar features from the original film Trip To The Moon and appropriate it into a music video. Katy Perry was able to echo her Wide Awake live performance by using similar features from Tonight, Tonight and turn it into a live performance using those ideas and transcending into her own style. Artists’ appropriate and echo one another’s work to accentuate the brilliance of it. Echoing and appropriating art is to turn it into one’s own style, but going off one’s motive and turning into new art or altered art.
