Japes And Oh Case Summary

Scrutiny he couldn’t perform his one task of occupying the executives. After a number of outings, similar to the basketball trip, Japes and Oh were accused of abusing the hotels trade policy. To start with, there was no trade policy and all the trades or exchanges that Japes and Oh had ever done were approved and endorsed by Bootlick. An unhappy new server made the complaint stating that the trades benefited only a few and set a poor example for the rest. Jersey and Oh had planned a much smaller outing to go see a comedy show in the city.

One of the reasons for the outing was to console Rupee, the limousine driver, who had lost his son to cancer. Rupee would drive the gang in to the city and as a result of an overnight room trade the ten managers would be treated to free drinks at city bar. Rupee and his driver were given complementary tickets to the show purchased by Japes. In exchange he would make sure all the servers arrived at their homes safely. Upon returning to the hotel a number of the servers were laughing and acting silly, as they had had a great night of fun.

The ramifications of this run-of-the-mill outing would forever change the hotel’s culture and became known as “The Spanish Inquisition”. Japes, Oh, and Bubblehead were all summoned to the woodshed for a meeting with Bootlick and Snub-nose. A night auditor had written to the owners making outrageous accusations in particular stating what Oh, months earlier, had said about screwing a guest’s wife and more recently the outing to the comedy show. Bubblehead was at the meeting and for some reason he was supporting the audit servers accusations in a hopes to get Oh and Japes fired.

Bootlick, in his usual fashion, denied any knowledge of the outing and any trades involved. This was a flat out lie. Japes, although he did not plan the outing, took responsibility of what transpired emphatically stating that nothing was done without approval. The hotel periodically would comp guest rooms, and more specifically Japes had full authority to do so at his own discretion. He reiterated that all the trades the movie theater in particular benefited everyone in the hotel. The particular outing in question was to a comedy show for mature audiences, which would have been inappropriate for the ladies.

All interested managers, including Bubblehead, were invited, and nobody was excluded. The situation with Oh and the hotel guest was reviewed at length with Bootlick months’ prior. During this disruption to the hotel, the customer service scores went from an average of ninety to the low fifties. Snub-nose, was sticking her nose in where it didn’t belong, and she did not have the skills to handle the situation. As a result, Japes, Oh, and Bubblehead were summoned to the woodshed two weeks later to face their accuser as to what he wrote in “the letter”.

The accuser was a part-time night auditor who Japes’ had hired and apparently he had aspirations of being the Rooms Executive. He felt that he and Bubblehead could run the rooms operation in a better more professional manner. This little political coup became quite transparent for what it was. The accuser never showed up for the meeting as there was no truth to the accusations and he simply lied. Bubblehead would never recover from his betrayal of all the managers and eventually would leave with his tail tucked between his legs.

Snub-nose, unable to apologize, stated that even though we did nothing wrong the fact that it appeared as though we did something wrong was the issue. It was all about appearance not reality. It is exactly what Japes dad had always warned him about. It is not what people say it’s what they do that matters. In this case it’s not what they did it’s what other people say. As the years went by, the woodshed meetings in general had taken on an entirely different agenda. It, to a certain extent, was related to 911 as this tragic day forever changed the landscape for Hotels worldwide.

Bootlick would often refer to the hotel servers as lemmings that would follow him around as if he were the Pied Piper. This total lack of respect for his coworkers would normally come to the forefront during an outside event such as a social gathering with the Chamber of Commerce. Scam also became quite disrespectful when referring to servers that worked at the hotel. At one meeting he wanted to know what was wrong with Mildred, an elderly housekeeper, because he noticed that she was shaking all the time. Japes informed him that she had a mild case of diabetes and sometimes she would shake.

She was, however, one of the best workers and most loyal servers the hotel ever employed. Scam didn’t care for some odd reason he wanted her pushed out of the hotel. Japes ignored this ridiculous request and thought these two don’t even act like hoteliers. Something from the outside world must have influenced them, as their leadership was more like a cancer than guidance. He was bewildered by this behavior and hoped it was just a phase with no real substance behind it. It started many years earlier but Japes’ being a third generation server and liking the situation that he was in chose to ignore the truth.

The truth being that Scam was a bad person and over the years would continuously reinforce his lack of respect for him. The first hint of his thievery was at a year-end review when Bootlick and Japes were detailing capital expenses. Japes noticed two ten thousand dollar expenditures for new furniture at the lobby bar. The hotel had not purchased any new furniture for the lobby bar that year but the invoices had been approved by Scam. When informing the corporate controller of the situation he was told not to be concerned as that Scam would have the final word with any capital improvements.

Apparently, there would be no checks and balances and the invoice “Barbarian Associates” would get approved a lot. Also, during that first year he had achieved a small bonus by reaching certain goals. At the year-end review Scam informed him that he did not qualify for this and hung up the phone. Japes went on to deal directly with the controller and finally after realizing that the goals were clearly met it was decided he would get paid. Scam was just trying to bully him like he did every other server. Scam often called requesting Japes’ to hire new associates. Early on, he was forced to hire Scams niece and to keep an eye on her.

He placed her in the maintenance department as her appearance and attitude would have destroyed the professional and highly skilled front office. It didn’t take long for her true colors to come through as line servers realized that she was a thief. One-day the local police department reported that a guest had his wallet stolen, which included tickets to a basketball game, a credit card, and three hundred dollars in cash. Scams niece was the last employee in the room and was bragging about going to the game. Japes managed to keep her out of the authorities hands and miraculously the wallet and credit card were found outside the hotel.

She would no longer work at the hotel but would be seen over the years as her families company was hired to do capital improvements to the building. Japes’ was also told to hire the town assessor’s daughter, as she was a friend of the hotel. He refused and the daughter eventually ended up working for Ho-hum as a server. The town assessor was given a free membership to the pool. The staff was told “ He is a friend of the Hotel”. When Capes had suggested and eventually accomplished turning the pool into a new ballroom Scam took full recognition not only for the implementation of the structure and its design, but for the idea itself.

During a review, when Capes brought up his accomplishments, Scam and Snub-nose just looked at him and shook their heads saying how disappointed they were in him taking the credit. This clear act of idea piracy was compounded when Scam in all his glory took full credit for the standard-bearer award in Sin City. He stood up in front of his peers and hundreds of hotel owners from around the world. Little Cesar had convinced his owner that this was all his doing. As time went on Scam became bolder and bolder in his desire to steal from the hands that fed him.

Japes worked hard for a number of months to get the right vendor that would put a beautiful kiosk in the lobby. After negotiations and the agreement to make a custom mahogany cabinet the deal was done. The only thing left was for the vendor to take the contract over to Scam for his signature. Japes received a call from the vendor telling him that Scam needed five thousand dollars in cash or he would not sign the contract. The vendor was irate and said this was clearly a bribe and to whom could you speak. Japes sat at his desk shaking his head and told the gentleman that he would have to talk to the owners.

He apologized profusely for Scams behavior but knew that nothing would happen even after the vendor made the call. Scam, would have talked his way out of it and gone about his business as if nothing had ever happened. He continued his non-server ways by having his own wedding at the hotel for one hundred guests. They had high-end everything and only paid the hotel two thousand dollars for what was a twenty thousand dollar event. All of this pales in comparison to how he and his cousin screwed the owners on the development of the sister property.

Scam used his old practices sharing the bids with his cousin and this time he undercut a one million dollar quote for nine hundred and ninety nine thousand dollars and throughout the process of renovating the new property he changed the scope of work. Scam would oftentimes be seen walking with the owner stating that this had been done and that had been rebuilt when in fact nothing was done at all. He and his cousin had taken millions of dollars from the family over the years. He cried like a baby when, Barbarian Associates, was shut down by the state inspectors.

They had not cleared working areas of a hazardous substance and as a result put hundreds of both servers and guests at risk. The worst thing that can happen to a hotel is to have it close. They were forced to close this hotel, and the owners would spend over a half million dollars in fines and legal fees before all was said and done. It makes a server scratch their head as to how Scam could convince the owners that he was not to blame. He was one of the most gifted fabricators of the truth that Japes would ever deal with and the owners were so wealthy they let it all slide.

Scams depravity wasn’t isolated to his professional life but was also made evident at his surprise fiftieth birthday party. He was taken off guard when returning home by twenty close friends for the celebration. His new bride was dismayed as Scam entered their home stinking of scotch, cheap perfume, and covered with lipstick. His cousin had gotten him a hooker and dropped him off at the door. The end of the Oasis came in a way that Japes never dreamed of. He was sitting in the cafeteria one day and noticed dozens of flyers scattered throughout. Curious as to what that entailed, he began to read an excerpt from a neighboring state’s newspaper.
