The main difference between the two theories is that situational leaders are made, whereas trait leaders are born. This debate has been ongoing for many years with no clear consensus. In order to try and reach a conclusion, this essay will explore both sides of the argument before making a judgement.
Situational Leadership Theory (SLT) was first proposed by Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard in 1969. The theory is based on the idea that there is no “one size fits all” approach to leadership, and that the style of leadership must be adapted to the situation. The key factors that determine the appropriate leadership style are:
– The maturity of the followers (i. e. their ability to take on responsibility and make decisions)
– The task at hand (i. e. its complexity and ambiguity)
SLT therefore suggests that the leader must adapt their style to match the situation. If the followers are experienced and capable, then a more laissez-faire style may be appropriate as they will require less supervision and direction. However, if the followers are inexperienced or the task is complex, then a more autocratic style may be necessary in order to ensure that things are done properly.
One of the main criticisms of SLT is that it places too much emphasis on the situation and not enough on the leader themselves. It could be argued that this theory ignores the fact that some people are simply better leaders than others, regardless of the situation. Another criticism is that SLT is too prescriptive, and does not allow for any flexibility or creativity on the part of the leader.
The trait theory of leadership was first proposed by Walter Lippmann in 1937. The theory is based on the idea that there are certain traits which are common in leaders, and that these traits can be identified and measured. The key traits which are associated with leadership are:
Alternatively, the trait theory is one in which the person does not volunteer for the position of leader conscientiously, to put it another way, they are born as a natural leader and will frequently take on the role of leader in an anonymous setting already possessing the necessary qualities for the job. The Trait approach examines. It was attempted to discover what characteristics were most frequent in those thought to be natural leaders. In a study, several features were suggested as being helpful, including height, weight, appearance, and intelligence.
The test did not however produce any significant findings and was largely criticised for being unreliable.
The trait approach to leadership has been further developed over the years and there are now many different theories and models which all go some way to trying to explain what traits are associated with a leader. Some of these theories include; The Big Five personality traits, the Dark Triad personality traits, emotional intelligence and many more.
One of the most widely accepted theories when it comes to leadership is that of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is said to be made up of four main components; self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills and empathy. It is thought that leaders who possess high levels of emotional intelligence are able to better understand and control their own emotions as well as the emotions of those around them. This then allows them to better manage difficult situations and build strong relationships.
So, are leaders born or made? The answer is most likely a bit of both. While some people may be born with certain qualities which make them more suited to leadership positions, it is also possible to develop these qualities over time. What is important is that if you want to be a leader, you need to be willing to put in the hard work and dedication required. Leadership is not something that comes easy and it takes time, effort and practice to become good at it.
