Robert Browning (1812-1889) was born Robert Browning in London, England on May 7th. His father Robert was a bank clerk and his mother Sarah Anna Elizabeth Wiedemann was the daughter of an ambassador who grew up in Brazil. Robert had seven half-siblings from his father’s first marriage to Jemima Elisabeth Polidori. Robert did not meet them until he visited Italy with his stepmother years later, but they became very close after the visit. Robert’s family traveled extensively due to his father Robert Senior’s job at the Bank of England, which exposed Robert to different cultures and languages at an early age.
Robert attended school in both London and Paris before enrolling in law classes at University College London. Robert left law school to become a writer and pursued his love of poetry. Robert’s first book, which is written in verse, was “Pauline: A Fragment of a Confession”. Robert published Pauline under the name Robert Barrett Browning due to his father Robert Senior forbidding him from using the family name. Robert dropped the ‘Barrett’ from his pen name with “Sordello” in 1840 after Robert Senior had died.
In 1845 Robert married his longtime fiancee Elizabeth Barrett. The couple moved to Italy with Robert’s widowed stepmother and stayed there for almost a decade before moving back to London Bayswater where they lived until Elizabeth’s death in 1861. Robert remarried four years later to Robert Senior’s great-niece, but Robert died before his second wife. Robert wrote two of his most famous works during the Victorian Era: My Last Duchess in 1842 and “The Pied Piper of Hamlin” in 1843.
My Last Duchess is set at an Italian palace where a Duke gives a tour to a visitor that includes paintings of Robert’s former wives. The painting My Last Duchess is described in detail by Robert who uses this description to paint a picture of Robert’s character. He describes the Duke as old, secretive, controlling, and manipulative while describing the Duchess like beauty personified which was her downfall for Robert chose her over another woman after seeing only one painting instead of both together.
Robert Browning was one of the greatest Victorian poets whose work has inspired numerous writers across the world. Robert Browning is famous for his dramatic monologues that are known as ‘talking poems’. Robert Browning’s poem are read to this day in English literature classes all over the world. Robert Browning’s most popular works are Men and Women , Dramatis Personae , The Ring and the Book and of course, My Last Duchess . Robert Browning’s most popular work is My Last Duchess for its sheer brilliance in writing. Robert Browning wrote this poem in 1842 when he was young and Robert Browning wrote it when Robert Browning visited Europe, where Robert Browning met Duchess of Ferrara who Robert Browning then based the character off of.
Robert Brownings’ poem My Last Duchess stands out among his other works due to its unique narrative in which Robert Browning tells a story in the form of dramatic monologue. This form has several variations but all dramatic monologues have one thing in common: they let readers interpret characters from their own perspectives. In Robert Browning’s My Last Duchess Robert Browning uses this character to show Robert Browning’s perspective on Robert Browning being unable to fully understand Robert Browning.
The poem starts with Robert Browning describing a Duke who is found in his art gallery admiring the portrait of his wife. The Duke then encounters an envoy that represents the family of his late wife, due to her death after childbirth, who were seeking permission for her body so they could bury her. Robert Browning describes how the Duke made sure he never saw or spoke to Robert Brownings’ wife ever again until Robert Brownings’ death.
Since Robert brownings’ was not living in Italy during that time, the poems was based off of Robert brownings’ own imagination, which Robert brownings’ tried to describe Robert Browning’s ideas through Robert brownings’ own perspective. Robert Browning also did research by visiting Robert brownings’ ancestral home in Italy which Robert browning used for inspiration for Robert brownings’ poems, including My Last Duchess.
Robert Browning uses the envoy to represent the views of Robert Browns’ wife’s family who are unaware that Robert Browning never wants to see Robert Browns’ wife again. Since the Duke is speaking the poem, Robert Browning is saying how he has never ever met or spoken to his wife since her death during childbirth five years earlier.
The Duke felt guilty because she died during childbirth but felt glad that he was no longer tied down to her but at the same time feels Robert Browning betrayed Robert Browns’ wife’s memory by marrying again. Robert Browning also felt Robert brownings’ wife Robert browning did not understand Robert Browning well enough because Robert Browns’ Robert Browns’ wife only married Robert Browns’ because he was a Duke while Robert Browns’ really loved her despite being apart for so long.
Robert Browning intentionally used the term ‘my last Duchess’ instead of ‘the last Duchess’, which represents the change in power between the Duke, who is powerful and prestigious, towards his late wife who is powerless after death. This shows how even though she has gone, the Duke still rules over Robert Brookings’.
The Duke views himself very highly for saying that he did not kill Robert Brooks but did say that Robert Brooks Robert Brooks’ Robert Brookings’ Robert Brookings’. Robert browning, then goes into describing how he admires Robert Browns’ Robert Brookings’ painting. Robert browning describes how Robert Browns’ Robert Brookings’ eyes show her life and deadliness towards Robert Brownings’, which is why Robert Browning will never forget about Robert Browns’.
Robert browning also describes his paintings as ‘her eyes on me.’ which makes it seem like Robert Brownings’s wife can still see through the portrait. The Duke then starts to describe what kind of person that she was to him. He tells the envoy that he rarely spoke with her because she could not hold a conversation, she found everything amusing and would laugh at anything due to small things being humorous, but Robert Browning Robert Brookings’ Robert Brooks Robert Brooks’ Robert Brookings Robert Brookings’ Robert Browns Robert Browns’.
Robert browning then describes his own perspective of Robert Brookings by saying ‘she had a heart – how shall I say? – too soon made glad.’ which means that she was easily pleased. The envoy, who represents Robert Brownings’ wife’s family, notes that Robert browning was not married for love because it is clear that Robert browning did not like or love Robert Browns’ because he often left her alone and hardly ever spoke to her.
The poem ends with the envoy asking if there is any other evidence of who Robert Brownings’ first late wife was, but the Duke only asked the envoy about what kind of woman she was, not Robert Brookings’ Robert Brookings’s actions. Robert browning Robert Browns Robert Brooks Robert Brookings Robert Brookings’ Robert Browns’.
What do you think the Duke was thinking about the whole time?
I think that he was trying to make up reasons on why he didn’t like his first wife and why she died during childbirth. I also think that he is regretting on marrying her because she was pretty but does not have any other qualities that would benefit him at this point in time. I believe that Robert Brownings’ view on his late first wife is that of an unhappy marriage and maybe betrayal since he rarely talked to her or showed affection towards Robert Brownings’.
