At first I just wanted a cookie. In elementary I would get a cookie from my parents if I did well in school. So during that time I would try my hardest to do well in school just so I could receive the prize. But by the time I got to junior high I discovered that I did not want to do well in school for the cookie. I just loved to learn about new things. Even though there are many financial obstacles that stood in my way of learning, I still plan on succeeding in life and helping out others who are in a similar situation I am in today.
Growing up I was simply indigent. My father worked two minimal wage jobs while my mother raised me. Both of my parents could not speak English and did not reach high school, which made it more difficult for me. After my older half-sister left I was in charge of any interaction between my parents and the English-speaking world. From translating for them to reading bills I was always there. Even through all that my parents worked hard so that I can attend a private school. But going to the private school wasn’t inexpensive; because of economic situations I often wasn’t able to take my midterms/final exam for each of my classes. If I wanted a programming class or attend computer camp it would cost a lot of money that I didn’t have. I want to make it easier for the next generation. I can fantasize about making an entire school for the gifted low income students but let us be practical. While that goal can be achieved I would like to start off small. I would like to do simple things such upgrading a school’s technology department or forming a computer club at a local school. Through the club I can teach people who want to learn about technology, but doesn’t have the means to take a course. In this way I can significantly impact a lot of lives without having to make huge and idealistic…
