Pitbulls have a bad reputation in today’s society. The media is showing the world that Pitbulls are aggressive, vicious animals who attack people and other dogs, ripping them apart in minutes. They’re making it seem like Pitbulls are dangerous creatures that need to be put down right away. To most people they may think Pitbulls are evil dogs with no heart, but Pitbulls are actually loving and caring dogs who only attack people when provoked. Pitbulls with good owners don’t need to be put down; they can become one of the most lovable and loyal dog you could ever have.
Pitbulls went through a lot in their history that made them seem like aggressive animals. Pitbulls originated from American Bulldogs and terriers. American Bulldogs were used as catch dogs for wild boars and cattle because of their strength, loyalty, and tenacious grip on whatever they caught hold of. They were brought over to England during the 1800’s where they became popular pets among hunters because of their ferocity towards other animals. Pitbulls were not used for dog fighting, however their tenacity and strength was put to the test in blood sports such as bull baiting.
Pitbulls were also popular security dogs during that time. Pitbulls protected people’s homes and livestock, making them seem like very dependable dogs. Pitbulls became one of the most loved pets during the Victorian era where they were seen as a status symbol due to how expensive Pitbull breeding was at that time. Pitbulls have been featured on many paintings, lithographs, and photographs from this era showing how much people adored Pitbulls up until World War I when German Shepherds became a preferred guard dog because they saw them as more reliable than Pitbulls.
Even though Pitbulls were not used in war, Pitbull muzzles that soldiers wore into battle became the Pitbull’s signature look. Pitbulls had their ears cropped and tails docked to make them seem like more fierce dogs. Pitbulls with cropped ears are seen as Pitbulls who are more aggressive than ones with uncropped ears; this is not true since it is against breed standards of Pitbulls today to be bred with cropped or docked ears.
Pitbulls were used for dog fighting up until 1987 when it was made illegal in almost every state in America. This did not stop people from dog fighting; they just did it underground where there were no cameras or scrutiny. Because Pit bulls were associated with dog fighting and Pitbulls were seen as dangerous dogs, Pitbull attacks became more prevalent in the news. Pitbulls soon became labeled as dangerous dogs that attack people all around America every day.
Pitbulls are only dangerous if they’re provoked or trained to be aggressive; Pit Bulls who have good owners care nothing of what their breed is, but rather show how loving and loyal they can be towards their owners. Pitbulls today are seen as dirty, messy animals because of all the stereotypes about them. Pitbulls came from working class backgrounds so it’s not accurate for them to be called “white trash” animals when in fact they are loved by many working class families in the U. S. , despite how much society may frown upon Pitbulls.
Pitbulls today are seen as wild, untrained animals despite how much time and effort Pitbull owners put into training their Pitbulls. Pitbulls who do not have good training often become aggressive because they were treated badly and did not know any other way to act other than be aggressive towards people and dogs due to lack of socializing with humans and other dogs when they were puppies. Pitbulls should not be judged by what the media shows them; Pitbulls can be loving family pets if given the chance to show it.

Pit bulls make up less than 5% of the dog population, but Pit Bulls are responsible for 72% of dog-related fatalities and 66% where a Pit Bull or Pit Bull Mix was involved. This does not mean Pit Bulls are inherently dangerous dogs; it only states that certain pit bull breeds need special care and caution. [4] Many cities have enacted laws against Pit Bulls to reduce their numbers because they cause such a disproportionate amount of damage. Most people think Pit Bulls should be banned from communities because they will inevitably attack other animals or humans. However, this is simply not true.
There is no scientific evidence showing Pitbulls as an inherently dangerous breed to humans, which is why Pit Bulls are still around. Pit Bulls can be found taking part in many different activities such as flyball, weight pulling, dock jumping and even therapy work. Pit Bull breeds make up a large group of very versatile dogs that have been able to accomplish more than most other dog breeds. [5] In conclusion, Pitbulls make excellent family pets with proper socialization and care. Pit bulls should not be banned from communities because they do not pose a significant risk compared to any other dog breed.
