The young adults nowadays consider body image is the major part of confidence. Social media has changed the idea of having healthy body to having a attractive body, because of the change that happen in last couple of years in social media and Hollywood influence on teens nowadays. For example, Hollywood actresses and fashion bloggers with their skinny bodies and makeup influence teens in a bad way. Nowadays there’s a lot of new popular people appear natural and don’t care about peoples comments, and the reason is that they believe about what they’re doing, so because of that a ot of popular people should influence people to be who they are. (In a survey 10,000 teens, slightly more than half of the boys and about two-thirds of the girls were unhappy with their bodies. One-third of teens would consider cosmetic to improve their body shape.
Two out of three girls under the age of 13 have dieted, with the change of people’s perspectives, also it affects on young people emotionally and from a young age they want to have the perfect body and show off, but they are too young to go through having the perfect body. (By Powell). For example, according to Meaghan Ramsey from TEDTALKS, a girl named Faye she is 13 years old and she was confused because her mom told her everyday that she’s beautiful, but her classmates says she’s ugly. After that, she posted a video of her self on YouTube asking people if she’s beautiful or ugly, she received over 13,000 comments from people with the nastiest impolite words that are harmful for a young age girl who going through a lot of changes in Faye’s life). Depression is the hardest situation that adolescent goes through.
Teenagers can receive a lot of negative energy from the internet and their community, because it controls the way that young adult think and act, the reason is that teens have anxiety so fast that they’ll get depressed for months, it command the thoughts in teens to not be themselves and dress in a certain way to let their community accept them for not being themselves. Depression can lead teenagers into a really hard stage, and that sage is to be mentally annoyed to control being depressed.
That can’t be fixed until they find a psychologist that can secure their stage of depression. First, teens can get depressed for a lot of reasons, but the main reason is that a teenager goes through a lot of changes. Such as, puberty and that modify a lot of hormones and that can equals mood swings like being sad, angry, tearful, upset (Powell 18), this statistics show that teens should be educated and inform that all of this kind of pictures aren’t real .
Not permanent depression can evolve and get more and more worse, but when being sad all the time it starts to have a stiff impact on family and school life, but a lot of teens need a professional help from a special psychologist that can evaluate him or her depression stage. There are three facts about problems with mental health. First, one of four people in the world has mental health difficulties in some point in their life. Second, serious motional disturbance affect one in ten young people at any given time. Third, one in eight teens has depression. According to the world health organization (WHO) and the United Nations about a new studies show that depression and other mental health problems are increasing among children and young people (Powell, 6) Family is the most important support that teens can receive, and parents should tech their kids that they are important as a person in this world, and not to be broken Easley.
Opposing argument: Teenagers should be responsible for their emotions, and be educated about what’s in social media, teenagers and their phones is the parents responsibility, and all parents should know when to give their children a phone, because phone is a big responsibility and the internet is a big world and sometimes can get dangerous.
When teenagers get a phone they’ll have access to the internet, a lot of false advertisements the internet has, like fake skinny models, magazine for children with pictures of girls with make up, that’s why teenagers get depressed and some times they commit suicide, with all the change that’s happening because of the change of body image. Teenagers should be educated and be generally informed that all the images and a lot of life style stories they read is just fake or not healthy for them.
The negativity that media disperse on self-image affects the behavior on teenagers. Media changed a lot of body image perspective from the whole world, historically body image has changed a lot since then, the most important factor of this huge changes is about war, work, religion, it all influenced people to think about their personal appearance. But there’s a lot of organization that spread awareness to fight the idea of having an extreme skinny body.
Bullying, cyber bullying, suicide, and over eating can be the cause of media having bad influence to young adults, young adult are spending all their day on the internet, with all the movies and TV shows influencing teens to be and act like them is not normal, because these TV shows are all about a fake story with unhealthy actresses that changed who they are to impress the people around them. A lot of people talk about when they got a cellphone when they were at the age 20, or 19, but now parents give their children cellphone in a really young age.
Parents doesn’t know that they give their children a huge responsibility to take care of, a lot of parents tell their children that having a phone is a big responsibility. Phone is like allowing kids to access and browse what ever they want, as inappropriate pictures and videos. Online bullying or as people call it cyber bullying is the use of technology to communicate with the people in contact to harm them by typing harmful words about them.
Conway mentioned Teenagers can have big responsibility towards their words as they post it on social media, like how people should look or how they should act and all of that affect the persons that got bullied feelings and that will equal a lot of changing of his behavior, according to Trisha Parbhu, Statistics shows that there is 52 percent of the U. S is cyber bullied (TEDTalks). Cyber bullying has been a really important subject in America today, because cyber bullying is high in America, according to Trisha Parbhu, there are 38 percent report suicidal tendencies (TEDTALKS).
There is a famous YouTube video about a girl who commit suicide because her friends on school were bullying her everyday with the worst and harsh words that even adults don’t say it, and after that s the bullying becomes physical and everyone would push her or hit her, then it becomes more and more intense, the group who bullied her set a plan to go to her and do inappropriate things to her and after all of that happened, she killed her self, when the family find out about her they saw that she posted a video, and that video she hold white boards and she write on them words to say what happen to her.
The moral of the story is that everyone from teens to adults should be careful about anything he post in the internet or anything he says to anyone, because the person don’t know what is the consequences of the words he say. According to Trisha parbhu, she made a research about who and what ages about people posting mean and harmful comments, the age were from 12 to 18 (TEDTalks).
Advertisement has negative affect on body image by showing slim models, and fit bodies especially for the teens, and the one thing that teenagers don’t know that their bodies are going through a lot of changes and adolescence. Puberty is a physical change that happens to both males and females, and with all that body change teenagers cant have the body that they want, that’s one and big reasons they cant even be like those big grown up models, but the change of body image has really been a big problems that affected dangerously on young adults.
Suicide is dangerous topic and scary for a lot of parent’s because it a threat to the family safety, because of the social media apps that contain a lot of ways to bully and have no privacy as a normal person does, according to Powell 5, everyday 14 people there ages are between 15 and 24 killed by suicide, so that every young kid dies every 100 minutes.
Teenagers are not mature enough to see things in big perspective, with having a all these big celebrities that spread skinny bodies and being rich, that will convince young adults to see their bodies as if they are not beautiful, the important thing that teens forget that they should have healthy bodies as for their age. Its good to have a healthy body, but people should realize that body image is not the most important thing in their life. People shouldn’t focus on body appearance, but they should be more eye opening about the behavior, even though social media play a significant role in teenager’s life.
