Make a Wish Non-Profit organizations play a large role in the American society. They are designed to serve the public and help in many ways. A nonprofit is supposed to use its revenue to benefit the public. Many of these organizations are educational, scientific, charitable, or religious. Some popular nonprofits that are well known today are universities, hospitals, and some organizations, such as, The Make a Wish Foundation. Some nonprofits, such as, hospitals and universities, have salaries and bonuses. Other nonprofits like foodbanks have salaries as well but they are much smaller figures than those in hospitals or universities.
There are four pressures that a nonprofit has weighing down on them. These four pressures are Voluntarism, professionalism, civic activism, and commercialism. Voluntarism is an important aspect of nonprofits. It helps people freely express their values, expressions, religious, and cultural beliefs. People volunteer to help or donate to organizations. Many of these volunteerisms are religiously inspired, but not all of them. Professionalism is gained through knowledge or formal training. Many of these people are those who work in hospitals, such as, doctors.
Civic activism is getting involved in political or other issues within the organization or the community. This is an important aspect of nonprofits because people need to get involved to make a change or a difference. The last feature is Commercialism, also known as a type of global promotion. This is important for the organization to be organized and strategic. It involves planning and measurements to make the organization as efficient as possible. These impulses are important aspects for a nonprofit to run smoothly. Make a Wish is considered a nonprofit organization.
They have one wish in mind, and that is to grant a wish to children who are going through a major-medical crisis. They believe that one wish can change a child’s output on life or make them feel more special. These wishes that Make a Wish grants does not just affect those children. It affects everyone involved including the doctors, community, and family. It gives people a new outlook on life, and can make someone optimistic in a time of sadness and hopelessness. No matter what a person faces in life, one simple wish can change their mindset along with others.
Just like every organization, there was a trigger that started The Make a Wish Foundation. In 1980, a United States cu agent, Tommy Austin, came in contact with a young boy who had leukemia. Austin brought up the idea of helping this child fulfill his dying wish. This young boy, Chris Greicius, wanted to live a day in the life of a police officer. Austin decided to talk to some local police officers to help this boy live his dream. He would stop at no cost. Slowly everything started coming together, and people started to volunteer. People worked together to make this the most special day Chris has ever had.
Some individuals worked together to get him a uniform, so he could life his dream for the rest of the time he was alive. After all this, Chris passed away. Austin and the officers involved, Frank Shankwitz, Scott Stahl, were so touched by the fact that so many young children are dying every day and do not have the chance to live their lives. Word started to spread around about how these two officers helped make this boys dream come true. Officer Shankwitz decided to talk to people about starting a wish granting organization. Groups of people got together to help with the formation of The Make a Wish Foundation.
Shankwitz went around for donations to help his business start off on the right food. Little by little people would donate to help children fulfill their biggest wishes. In November 1980, make a Wish received a tax exempt for having a nonprofit organization. The foundation was able to raise about two thousand dollars to help with the first official Make a Wish kid. The first child the foundation helped was a seven-year-old boy who also had leukemia like Chris. This boy had a few wishes, to be a fireman and go to Disney and fly in a hot air balloon.
Again, the people in charge helped this boy live a life as a fireman, and the boy was so excited and got to blow the siren. This also became one of the first Disney wishes. Everyone was surprised that people who did not even know this boy stepped in to help him. This organization started to inspire the nation. Television broadcasts and magazines started to advertise Make a Wish in hopes of inspiration to get more money to help. In 2016, about 270,000 children benefited from the make a wish foundation. Each child gets to experience one special wish they have. Make a wish on average, grants a wish every 35 minutes.
Make a wish will be around until there are no sick children in the world. Wishes make sick kids feel better, and sometimes when a kid feels better they might themselves start to get better. Chris’s mother today is still surprised with how far this organization has come, and how her son touched the lives of so many individuals. That is what life is all about, helping people who might not always be able to help themselves because somewhere along the line a life can be changed. Every nonprofit organization has a specific way that is run. If the nonprofit lacks organization and money, it would be hard to keep the organization going.
Make a Wish has its own organizational plan of how they function. It consists of many groups of people to make this business as successful as possible. Make a Wish has many sources of revenue coming in. Some of the main places where make a wish gets its revenue are from corporate alliances and individual contributions. The revenue is divided among several different groups. About twenty one percent goes to management and fundraising, whereas seventy nine percent goes to the program services. Male a Wish has several individual donors that were impacted by the loss of a loved one.
When people experience a situation themselves, they are more inclined to donate. People sometimes need to see the story in order to believe it. Some of these specific donors are Ned and Suzie Allen, Don Hamilton, and Jeff Lutrell. All these donors were personally affected, whether it was a loss of a love one or if they, themselves were going through a medical crisis. Jeff Lutrell was a then year old who was at battle with Leukemia. Jeff used his wish not only to help himself, but to also help other children fulfill their dreams. He wanted to create action figures and have part of the proceeds go to the make a wish foundation.
He ended up raising $32,500 for the Make a Wish foundation. The make a wish foundation also has a specific board of employees that make the magic happen for these children. They have a board of directors, a senior leadership team, and a medical advisory team. The national board focusses on charting the make a wish vision and mission. It also works on the public standing and legal aspects of the company. They provide accountability to the company. The senior leadership team works together with others, staff members and volunteers, to reach the goal of granting a child a wish.
There are several branches within this branch. Some people work on the operational activities while others work on wish granting and fundraising. The senior leadership’s main goal is to make sure that they can grant the wish. The medical advisory staff works on making sure that the children are healthy enough to be able to fulfill their wish. They give guidance and advice and work on strategies. All these branches have one thing in mind, and that is to make sure that the child can be blissful and fulfill their lifetime wish. So how does make a wish grant wishes?
Make a wish follows several steps in a process to grant wishes. The steps include referral, medical eligibility, the wish, and creating joy. In the referral step, make a wish will personally deal with the families, medical professionals, or children themselves. The child has to be at least two and a half and under the age of eighteen to be granted a wish. The child also cannot have a received wish from another organization. The next step is medical eligibility. In this step, with the help of a physician, determine if the child actually has a life threatening illness.
It has to be progressive, malignant, or degenerative. The child’s life has to be placed in jeopardy. The third step is to send a team to the child to figure out what the wish might be. They work together with the child and family to help get the best wish a child could ask for. The final step includes creating a personalized experience that the child could spend the final moments of their life in pure joy and happiness.
