The Last Of The Mohicans is a 1992 American epic historical drama film set in 1757 during the French and Indian War. It was directed by Michael Mann, from a screenplay adapted by Mann, Christopher Crowe, and Douglas Cook. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Hawkeye, Madeleine Stowe as Cora Munro, Russell Means as Chingachgook, Eric Schweig as Uncas, Jodhi May as Alice Munro, Maurice Roeves as Magua, and Patrice Chereau as General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm.
The movie is about two white trappers who are captured by the Huron tribe; they become involved in their captors’ and the British-French war that is going on in the American East. The film was produced by Morgan Creek Pictures. Background The movie was made during a time of renewed interest in Native American culture, from Dances with Wolves to Geronimo: An American Legend. The screenplay was not an accurate portrayal of the source novel but instead used only the basic premise of a Huron warrior becoming involved with a colonial woman during a time of war between two races for land.
The dialogue contained many inaccuracies, most notably that it contained about one sentence written in Algonquin (the language that The Last Of The Mohicans uses). Bagheera said it best when she wrote “The only real language in The Last of The Mohicans was the language of the heart”. The plot also changed several aspects that were well known to readers. The characters Hawkeye, Chingachgook, Uncas, and Cora all have different personalities, as do their relationships to each other.
Furthermore, since The Last Of The Mohicans is a book about events leading up to the French and Indian War, it mentions historical figures such as General Edward Braddock (who was not mentioned by name but instead went under “the General”), Colonel George Washington (who later became our first President), Geronimo , King Louis XV of France , etc. Story The was not too much good about The Last Of The Mohicans.
The plot did not follow the source material at all, and many of the characters were very different from their book counterparts. There are also historically inaccurate portrayals of certain events. The movie The Last Of The Mohicans is a horrible adaption of the novel but it does have one redeeming feature – Daniel Day-Lewis . His acting in The Last Of The Mohicans is superb; his portrayal of Hawkeye is so close to how I imagined he would act that I felt like I was watching the character come alive on screen right before my eyes.
The women are sisters, Alice and Cora Munro. The eldest sister is to marry the fort commander, Duncan Heywood. The Major asks his rescuers to carry on with their journey towards the fort so they can keep safe from further attacks by Indians who were working under Magua, a Huron Indian who was displaced when he lost favor of his tribe. The party is then ambushed again but this time their attackers are British soldiers led by Captain Randolph. The two groups form an uneasy alliance after realizing that they have the same destination.
The group comes together with another group of travelers consisting of Colonel Munro, Chingachgook (the Indian), his son Uncas and Hawkeye’s malevolent friend Magua. The British group consists of Heywood who is still in love with Alice, his sister Cora , another woman called Alice’s governess Mrs. Crawford, Major Duncan Heywood and David Gamut a singing teacher. The film ends on a cliffhanger when Magua is found to have gone over to the French army after being banished from the Indian tribe for falling out with them due to his plans failing.
The whole party are captured apart from Hawkeye and Chingachgook as they find Cora and fight off Indians who believe she should be taken captive as it was prophesied that someone with blonde hair would help them destroy the English at their fort which is where they were heading even though their plan was supposed to be taking place at a different fort which was actually The Munro’s Fort where he is now stationed as the commander. The film ends with Heywood getting shot by an Indian and Chingachgook being captured with Hawkeye looking on helplessly.
Alice runs into the fort pursued by Magua but her fiancee Duncan shoots him dead whilst she escapes inside to safety just in time before Magua manages to stab her. The Indians retreat never to be seen again apart from Uncas who takes his injured father back to their village where they are both welcomed home by the tribe. The British attacked The French fort which they win so The War is saved for them, however, Uncas dies due to injuries sustained during the fight against the French army at their fort after The British brought The French to The Indian’s village so The Indians could have their revenge.
In the beginning of The Last Of The Mohicans, Hawkeye and his Dad rescue a group of travelers from being attacked after they had been led into a trap by an Indian who is supposed to be on their side but betrays them as he wants to take power at The tribe that he was banished from since their chief favored Magua over him because he believed that if you beat someone down enough they may eventually come back begging for your forgiveness.
