Theme Of Connection Essay

Connections Report Connections The theme of love connection between people is a very important part of life. I choose this theme as it is a very relevant and relatable subject for many people in our society. The four texts I chose were: the fictional novel ‘Delirium’, by Lauren Oliver, the song ‘Blank Space’ by Taylor Swift, song ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore and fictional novel ‘Girl Online’, by Zoe Sugg. There was a strong connection of love between two people in these texts.

The first text that I looked at that showed the connection of love was Delirium. This novel discusses the connection of love. Love is the main theme of this novel. The main character Lena, lives in a society that believes love is a disease that people should be cured against. Before she is cured she falls in love with an Invalid (a person who has not taken the ‘cure’ and lives in the ‘ Wilds’) called Alex. Alex convinces her to leave her society to live with him in the wilds before she turns 18 and is required to get cured.

Lena agrees, but on their way to the wilds Alex tragically dies leaving Lena on her own in a place unknown to her with people she doesn’t know. These examples show the connection of love in a unique way. Normally we think of love being an important part of life, but in this book the government believe love isn’t a good thing and that the world is a better place without it. My opinion of this view of love is that it is very different and I don’t believe that it will make the world a better place.

Although it would stop jealousy, and other dramas that come along with love, I don’t think it would be a good idea because love is something that comes naturally and you can’t choose who you fall in love with. This take on love is very different to any other book I have ever read and I don’t know of any books with a similar view on love as this one has. From this text I have learnt that people can have very different views on love, which I believe is relevant to our world today. This connection is also shown in the song ‘Blank Space’ by Taylor Swift.

This song’s lyrics discusses the connection of love and how it could last forever or it could just not work out. Some example from this song that shows this connection is, the very first line which say ‘nice to meet you, where you been? ‘, and another part ‘so it’s gonna be forever, or it’s gonna go down in flames’. This first set of lyrics shows that the author of this song thought as soon as she saw this boy that he was the one, and the second set of lines tells the viewer what she is thinking. She is wondering if they will be together forever or if they will breakup.

I’ve got a long list of ex lovers’ this shows that many relationships haven’t worked out for her before, so this boy she sings about could end up on that list too. I think that Taylor Swift handles this aspect of love well because she knows from experience that love doesn’t always work out. This theme of love links into other songs by her which all have a similar theme. Most of her songs are about losing someone. This song helps me to realise that you just have to accept that not all relationships will work out and that if it is meant to be, it will be.

I think many people, young and old, need to learn from this and that life goes on. This songs discusses the connection of love. This song is about the struggles society creates for people identifying as a homosexual and discusses equality and discrimination of people that like the same sex. Macklemore was driven to write this song because of the issue of equal marriage right and the use of’gay’ as degrading word in society and in the hip hop industry. He wanted to set an example for others in the music industry, and help change the stereotypes of homosexuality.

As Macklemore writes in his song? bunch of stereotypes all in my head this shows that society riddles our brains into thinking that it isn’t alright to be gay, when really it is. These stereotypes make it hard for people to feel accepted about their sexuality. This song discusses how gay is used in an insultive way as quoted in the lyrics; ‘If I was gay I would think hip-hop hates me, Have you read the YouTube comments lately, “Man that’s gay” Gets dropped on the daily, We’ve become so numb to what we’re sayin” These examples show the connection of love, but in a different way to what we would usually expect.

This song has a different view on the connection of love compared to other books with the theme of love, as it is about homosexuality rather than heterosexuality. In my opinion I think what Macklemore is trying to convey is very smart, and I believe that there should be equality on who you love. I also thing that the words such as ‘gay’ shouldn’t be used with such negative connotations, and I’m sure many others in our society would agree. This situation of how love is perceived through the internet reminds me of ‘Girl Online’ by Zoe Sugg.

This young adult novel discusses the connection of love. This story is about a teenager who meets a boy, who she falls in love with, while on holiday in New York. She then finds out that this boy was quite a well-known singer who supposedly has a ‘girlfriend’. This then leads to the whole internet finding out about their relationship which causes a lot of trouble. But in the end everything is resolved and it has a happy ending. When the two of them first meet they get along very well and fall in love very quickly and everything is running smoothly.

A quote from the text to show that everything is going well at the beginning of the book is ‘I’ve met a boy. A boy that I really like. And I think he really likes me! In the middle of the book things start to get complicated. This book shows many sides to love, how everything can be so good and then how easily things can go wrong. I think that this book is very relatable to many teenage girl in society today, which makes it such a good story. These texts revel the significance of
