Transferrable Skills Essay

The chart on page 354-355 lists sixty-five transferrable skills. Transferrable skills are skills developed through experiences inside and outside of the classroom. These are abilities that help people thrive in any job, no matter what work-content skills they have. Three transferrable skills that I want to expand and improve on are interviewing people, using test results and other assessments to improve performance, and resolving conflict. Directly contacting people can provide valuable hands-on involvement and decrease the time performing solitary research.

Initial research will reveal the names of experts on the chosen topic, who you can then interview in person, over the phone, or via e-mail. There are several tips and techniques to get the most out of an interview. In order to improve my interview skills, I will perform the techniques listed in the book. Managing timeframes in regard to interviews is important because it portrays a professional and scheduled person. When interviewing a person, I will set a specific time and determine the duration of the interview.

This ensures that the interviewee won’t be annoyed or run late for another meeting. It’s key to follow the timeframe because that represents your timemanagement skills and may affect your relationship with the interviewee. Upon entering the interview, I will have a short, prepared list of questions to ask. This will demonstrate efficiency and effectiveness because it shows that I am organized and prepared to interview. At the start of the interview, I will greet the interviewee and introduce myself. This establishes the relationship and allows for the person to feel more comfortable.

I will also ask for permission to record the interview and if declined, be prepared to take written notes. With interviews you have to consider that things may not go as planned and it calls for the ability to come prepared for many factors. Throughout the interview, I will demonstrate courteousness and end on the agreed time. At the end, the interviewee will be followed up with a thank-you notes and get a copy of the final report/essay that includes their contributions. This ensures that the interviewee is open to the idea of future interviews which further strengthens the relationship.

I plan on interviewing more people in response to completing assignments and papers. For example, if assigned to discuss the impacts of the decline of corals, I would contact a marine biologist or coral reef expert and interview them. Having the ability to efficiently and effectively interview people is key to obtaining inside information and a better comprehension of the material being that they can better explain it. Tests and assessments can be used to improve performance. It provides an understanding as to where you currently are and where you currently are from your goal.

Although tests aren’t measures of self-worth or intelligence, these results can help improve the way we perform on tests. Since tests are cumulative, the content all builds upon one another. This means that the test grade can help build a knowledge background for more concepts to come. When you discover questions you’ve missed, understand why you lost points, and how to to solve the problem, you learn the content. This increases the chances of obtaining better scores in the future. Once the test is returned, I can look at questions that were incorrect.

Upon the incorrect items. I can determine what type of questions were missed versus ones that appeared on the test, preparation strategies, and what material the teacher based the test questions on. I will use the test and assessment results to improve my performance in school. My goal is to perform efficiently and effectively throughout all of my education years. I can achieve this goal by determining how to improve the way I study, learn, or take tests. If I received a low grade on a test then I could evaluate my test process and improve my score.

Since tests and assessments are mainly based off of information learned, I could change the way I study. Perhaps my study methods weren’t effective enough, so I would enhance it by incorporating a variation of formats and time spent studying. Learning the information is also crucial when taking tests and assessments. When you comprehend the information, it’s more beneficial than memorizing the information. I could improve my learning by taking notes in a different format and/or changing my learning style. Tests are also reliant on how well one can take a test.

I can improve my test-taking skills by taking practice tests online and reading about the different test formats. This skill is important when taking academic tests such as the SAT and ACT. Test results are essential in improving performance because it offers a view on your current level on performance and how you can improve. Resolving conflict refers to the ability to deal with the content of the conflict and then find a process to resolve the conflict. I can improve my skill in resolving conflicts by first focusing on the content. This can mean backing up to common ground where the points not in conflict are listed.

This allows the problem to be put into perspective to find a solution. For example, if i saw an argument between my team member, I could start by determining how the conflict first started. It can also be helpful to state all points of view because when people feel like they’ve been heard, they are more willing to listen. After stating what the problem is, you can come up with a solution that would work for everyone and evaluate the effectiveness. This can help resolve the conflict and mend relationships. Focusing on the process refers to the execution of carrying out the solution.

This can be noticing the need to be “right” in which you should approach the situation in a neutral way. It can also help to get an objective viewpoint in which a mediator can help everyone get their view across. This will decrease tension by moving the conflict towards a solution. Having the ability to resolve conflicts is important in all aspects of life. I can help to resolve a family, academic, or work issue. Everyone has their own perspective and opinions and sometimes arguments occur when there are differing views. The best thing to do is help resolve the conflict by applying several listed strategies.
