The story of Two Minute Drill takes place during autumn in Perry’s field. This is where Scott spends time with Chris and Casey (Chris’ dog) to unwind and release his emotions. He doesn’t focus on anything else and has a great time letting loose with his friends.

However, when it comes to football season, Scott is bench warmer. All his friends are either starting or on the varsity team and he is stuck playing with the freshmen.

Scott’s father was a former NFL player and now coach. When he was younger, his dad would always be working and didn’t have time for him. His mom would tell him that his dad loved him, but he never really felt it. One day, out of curiosity, Scott looks through his dad’s old things and finds a picture of him with another woman. He asks his mom about it and she tells him the truth- his dad had an affair and she forgave him. This revelation makes Scott angry and he starts to distance himself from his family.

At school, Scott is one of the outcasts. He doesn’t fit in with any of the groups and is always left out. When he finally makes some friends, they are taken away from him when they start playing football.

The only thing Scott is good at is video games. He spends hours upon hours playing them and becomes obsessed with winning. When he learns about Two Minute Drill, a national video game tournament, he starts to see it as his way out.

Scott practices day and night and manages to make it to the tournament. However, when he gets there, he realizes that he is in over his head. The other players are professionals and he doesn’t stand a chance against them.

The internal conflict occurs when Chris desires to enhance his math and language arts grades while Scott wishes to improve his football talents. They come up with a deal where they agree to assist one other. When Chris is hurt in the championship game, Scott must score the winning goals, which creates an external conflict.

Two Minute Drill is a book about teamwork, perseverance, and achieving your goals. This story will inspire readers to never give up on themselves and to always believe in their abilities. Two Minute Drill is a great choice for young adults who are looking for a motivational story.

A couple of weeks later, Chris saw how good Scott was as a kicker and wanted to tell everyone, but Scott held him back. Also, Chris finally told Scott about his not being able to read and it totally freaked out Scott. Finally, the last major event happened when Scott had to kick a field goal that would win the game for their team in the championship–and it was actually his first time playing! The climax of Two Minute Drill is when Chris finally told Scott that he couldn’t read.

This was a huge relief for Scott because he had been worried about his friend finding out and thinking less of him. Mike Lupica did an amazing job at creating suspense throughout the novel.
