“Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder” -E. B. White. And what a wonder the world of Pandora is to ex-marine Jake Sully in the movie, Avatar. Sully, who is paralyzed, takes on the persona of a Na’vi, the native people of Pandora, through an Avatar to gain information on these people for the government in order to get an operation to correct his disability. Though Avatar is science fiction, the movie shows us the reasons and effects of war within our society and how the environment can be damaged if we do not take care of it.
First, before getting into the social issues, we must start by analyzing the plot of Avatar. Jake Sully’s brother, Tom, was killed in a robbery. Sully decides to take his brother’s place in a mission to the distant world of Pandora. He learns a greedy corporate figurehead, Parker Selfridge, and a high-ranked colonel, Miles Quaritch, have intentions of driving off the native humanoid “Na’vi” in order to mine for the precious material, unobtanium, scattered throughout their planet. Sully is paralyzed and is promised that if he completes this mission, the government will pay for an operation to fix his back so he can walk again.
Sully begins to bond with the native people, However, as Sully he quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri. Meanwhile, Selfridge moves forward with his destructive plans, forcing the ex-marine to take a stand and fight back against the people he used to side with. He is forced into a fight for his life and his love’s world. At the end of the movie, the military forces are closing in on the Tree of Souls- the most important and sacred place to the Na’vi. Sully, in Avatar form, tells Neytiri to disengage from the fight. Sully blows up the approaching enemy, saving the Tree of Souls.
Quaritch, wearing a super powered AMP suit, traps Neytiri under the dead body of the animal that she rode to get there. Quaritch goes to kill Sully just as Neytiri escapes and kills the colonel. In the meantime, a lot of damage has been done to the lab and it is leaking oxygen. Sully wakes up and struggles to breathe and to put the oxygen mask on. He loses consciousness. While this is going on, the humans are fleeing to a ship to return to Earth. When Sully wakes up, he finds that he is in his Na’vi body and standing above him is the love of his life, Neytiri.
The issue in Avatar is about war and the environment. The war affects our world today because everyday someone dies from fighting in a war. Also, the environment is involved in this movie because Pandora, where the blue, mythical people, known as the Na’vi, live is in danger of being destroyed for its resources. In this movie, though there is a lot of different things happening that would not happen in real life, it still is relevant to the world. The main social issue in Avatar is powerful countries invading smaller countries.
History is full of powerful countries, like England, going to other areas of the world and taking over. This is also very similar to the United States and how we pushed the Native Americans out of their land and took it as our own. To break it down into smaller categories, the countries that invade steal the natural resources of the land and end up destroying the environment in the process. As a real life example, in 2009, we were at war in the Middle East. This year was a big year for suicide bombers targeting crowded and political areas.
Because of this, President Barack Obama decided to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. This is similar to the movie because Selfridge sent troops, including Jack Sully, to Pandora. One of the reasons for the Iraq war was over oil and other natural resources that the area had. In the movie, it was for the mineral, unobtanium. In Pandora, unobtanium is needed to survive. It was a powerful mineral because it had a strong magnetic field. It is extremely valuable to the human race. The humans wanted it because they wanted to use it as a fuel source for space travel.
The value and mining process of the mineral was the primary cause for the poor state of human and Na’vi relations. This is very similar to oil in today’s society. We need it as a source of fuel for cars and other machines. Humans have been fighting over oil for decades. Another thing that was similar between the movie and real life was the destruction of the environment. During the battle in the movie, grenades were thrown, destroying ships and the surrounding area. Also, the crashing ships ruined the area as well. This not only destroyed the land, but also killed many innocent Na’vi.
This is similar to when air strikes were called in Afghanistan, destroying buildings and killing many innocent civilians. Also, to get the unobtanium, the humans would have needed to destroy the land to mine it. My opinion Do larger powers still invade smaller countries for their resources? I think they do invade smaller countries for their resources. I think they do because they are larger and they think they can take control of them. They probably take their resources and bring them to their own resource and then tell someone about their resource so that they can get some.
The movie took place in 2009, when Obama sent 30,000 troops into Afghanistan. This is an example of a larger world power infiltrating a smaller country. Do these powers destroy the environment to get these resources? The powers are destroying a lot of things to get things, I think these powers destroy our environment to get these resources because when they are destroy resources. trying to get them and they are destroying things to get to them. They are also taking things away from people and animals to get these resources. 009- US called multiple air strikes on populated areas, destroying building and killing numerous innocent civilians. My conclusion on the movie Avatar, This movie is a symbol, referring to the Iraq War. Jake Sully’s brother, Tom, was killed in a robbery. Sully decides to take his brother’s place in a mission to the distant world of Pandora.
Sully is paralyzed and is promised that if he completes this mission, the government will pay for an operation to fix his back so he can walk again. Avatar shows us the reasons and effects of war within our society and how the environment can be damaged if we do not take care of it. As the war for resources continues, we must take big steps towards saving our environment
