The very first thing I smelt when I walked out of the meager airport was diesel. It was my first time out of the country and I didn’t know what I was going to expect. Was it everything people told me it was going to be? Was it depressing? Scary? Heart wrenching? Why yes, yes it was. However, it was an experience I will never forget.
When I got to Ecuador, I didn’t know what I was going to expect. I walked onto this huge yellow bus that was going to take me to the humongous hotel where I would be staying for the week. I remember trying cow stomach for the first time. This yellow, chicken shaped, meat was sitting on top of cold white rice waiting for me to devour it. The texture of this muscle was a plastic texture and I didn’t have the guts to finish it. I immediately spit it out into a clean, white napkin and threw it away in the abominable garbage can next to me. Therefore, I will never eat it again. However, I did have another adventurous moment with Ecuadorian food. That was when I tried their freshly picked pineapples. We drove to El Recreo and went to the nearest market that had pineapples. When we arrived at the market, this little, elderly lady sitting on her brown, tree trunk, stool, sliced our pineapples for us right there on the spot. She sliced the pineapple into circled slices which made it harder to eat. I remember the juice dripping down my chin onto my lap after every bite I took. It was the most luscious yet pungent pineapple I have ever tasted. The acid of it was dancing on my taste buds which made my tongue ever so raw, but I ignored the thought of me throwing it away and continued to finish the delicious fruit. The color of the pineapple was much different than the ones we get from the states. It was white, with little stripes of yellow coloring to it.
