Ethics Of Science In Frankenstein

Frankenstein is one of the most iconic novels in history due to the Frankenstein monster. Frankenstein has been adapted into movies, musicals, plays, and TV shows. Frankenstein has even inspired its own day (which was on November 1st) dedicated to Frankenstein’s creature, Frankenstein died 200 years ago today , Frankenstein’s Monster The original version of the Frankenstein story was Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus tells of Frankenstein’s creature becoming alive through science.

Frankenstein is an ethical dilemma between medical ethics and Frankenstein’s ambition to better humanity. Frankenstein discusses what would happen if medical ethics were breached for the sake of human advancement Mary Shelley (the author) had no intention on creating a debate about Frankenstein. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein as a way to cope with the loss of children she had during her lifetime.

Frankenstein was published anonymously at first, but it gained notoriety as many people believed that Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote it because he helped support Mary and their unborn child. Percy wanted his name on Frankenstein because he saw how much potential it held in being successful which made Mary mad considering she didn’t want anyone to know about Frankenstein at all. As Frankenstein evolved, science and technology advanced exponentially.

Frankenstein was like a light in the darkness for the scientific community because it shed possibilities of what could be accomplished if medical ethics were breached. Frankenstein’s monster has been used as an example to further research in medicine and bio ethics. Frankenstein gave hope that diseases such as polio and cancer could be cured one day through ethical means with Frankenstein’s help. The Frankenstein monster would go on to inspire many inventions such as defibrillators and Tricorders from Star Trek .

Frankenstein’s monster has become so popular because he is seen as an underdog when everyone else sees him as pure evil when in reality he never asked for this life to begin with. Through Frankenstein, Mary Shelley was able to share her own personal experiences and other subjects such as feminism. Frankenstein has evolved so much over the years that it makes one wonder what Mary Shelley would think of Frankenstein if she were alive today. Frankenstein is discussed in college classrooms everywhere due to its important place in history both historically and literarily speaking.

Mary Shelley had no intention of Frankenstein being seen as anything more than a story, but Frankenstein has become an icon with many versions of Frankenstein’s monster existing across all forms of media today. Frankenstein was written during a time when there wasn’t technology or medical advancements like there are now. Frankenstein would have never been possible without technology, medical advancements, and bio ethics coming together to help modernize Frankenstein.

Frankenstein is a story about ethics in science. Frankenstein, a man of science, uses science to create life from death. Frankenstein’s ethics would be that it is important to keep a scientific mind and not let emotions get in the way of science. Frankenstein did not listen to the implications of his actions and did not think them through because he was blinded by love for his creation.

Frankenstein paid dearly for disregarding the ethical side of being a scientist which resulted in the death of many innocent lives and put Frankenstein into exile for most of his adult life where he found redemption at last when helping other victims survive their pain. Frankenstein showed no regard for the impact his actions had on others; instead Frankenstein thought only about himself.

Mary Shelley (the author) shows us that Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s creation, and Frankenstein himself are all the same when Frankenstein decides to ignore society’s standards of normal behavior. Frankenstein is also, in a sense, his own worst enemy because he does not realize the implications of what he has done until it is too late. Shelley uses Frankenstein as an example of how life can be hellish for those who do not act ethically in science.

Mary Shelley criticizes scientists that choose to conduct unethical experiments by showing us that even if they succeed in their endeavors it may come at too high a cost for others and themselves. When Frankenstein conducts dangerous experiments with no regard for anything but success there are always consequences that Frankenstein fails to see until it is too late; Frankenstein disregards ethics in favor of science, Frankenstein disregards love in favor of science, Frankenstein disregards the consequences of his actions in favor of science.

Frankenstein is blinded by ego and selfishness which lead to Frankenstein’s demise. Frankenstein does not consider the consequences that his experiments may have on others or himself until it is too late; Frankenstein does not realize how devastating his actions are until he becomes a victim himself when everyone around him dies. Frankenstein is only able to find redemption once he realizes what he has done and decides to make up for it by helping others who were hurt by his deeds.

Frankenstein shows us the cost of conducting unethical experiments instead of acting ethically in science; Frankenstein shows us that if scientists put ethical morals before scientific endeavors then there would be no need for these kinds of horror stories. Frankenstein shows us the consequences of acting selfishly instead of thinking about the impact our actions have on others; Frankenstein shows us that if we all acted with a scientific mindset and not let emotions or ego get in the way then Frankenstein’s story would never have happened.

Frankenstein shows us how dangerous it is to let society’s standards for normalcy influence what scientists do, Frankenstein could have been a much different legend had Frankenstein just followed his own heart instead of following society’s standards. Frankenstein should never have tried to create life from death because it is against nature and defies God which is why he paid a terrible price for disregarding those rules. Frankenstein showed no regard for those around him when Frankenstein cared only about himself by giving Frankenstein an unnatural life instead of a natural life.

Frankenstein was blinded by his own ego which led Frankenstein to ruin Frankenstein’s life because Frankenstein failed to see the consequences Frankenstein would have to face when Frankenstein created life from death instead of from love. Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein as a warning for all scientists in the world that the price is just too high if they do not conduct their experiments ethically and with a scientific mindset in mind, then Frankenstein will happen again if we do not heed Shelley’s warning today.
