Evan Spiegel Snapchat Analysis Essay

Evan Spiegel went to Crossroad School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, where he would spend his weekends exploring the art of Photoshop. He did end up going to Stanford University for product design which eventually lead to Spiegel entering the Kappa Sigma fraternity where he met co-founder of Snapchat that eventually went on to create the Billion Dollar smart phone app that teens are talking about. Spiegel contributed to the creation of Snapchat by helping come up with the idea of this popular app and most likely became very involved with the creation of filters that make up the app. Snapchat was released in September 2011 but Spiegel and his business partner, Bobby Murphy, have been working on this for Spiegel’s college years which lies between 2009 through 2013. So, Spiegel had created his contribution to the business world while still at Stanford, which is located 35 miles South San Francisco, but he continues to work on the Snapchat from his home in Las Angeles, California. The app was supposed to be a place that was full of privacy and insurance that the sender was in control of what happened to their pictures or text. Spiegel did this by putting a built-in-alarm that would go off if someone ‘snapshotted’ or saved your photos. At first, Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy spread the app around to friends at Stanford University and displayed it a ‘sexting’ app. However, Snapchat didn’t become popular until it hit the high school ranks. We can only imagine why this is but it is most likely so teenagers can privately have conversations without prying eyes of other classmates or parental figures.
