“If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four of them sharpening my axe”. Due to my understanding I believe that President Abraham made a very good point when he said if he had six hours to cut down a tree he would use most of the time to sharpening his axes. President Abraham would spend most of the time sharpening his axe because he wants to make sure that his axe is sharp and ready to start cutting. He wants his axe sharp enough to cut the tree down because if the axe isn’t sharp enough he won’t be able to cut the tree down in time. it all depends on how sharp the axe is.
The real meaning behind the quote is that one should spend more time in preparation because it makes the process faster and much easier. If President Abraham spends Three hours sharpening his Axe he would finish the job on time compared to if he wasn’t prepared, in that case it would take him longer to cut down the tree. Moreover “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four of them sharpening my axe”. Anyone can easily connect this quote to history. One particular event in history that this quote connects to is after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After this event president Franklin D.
Roosevelt authorized the internment with executive order 9066. Was published on February 19, 1942 the order gave power which was used to declare that everybody of Japanese ancestry was excluded from the whole entire West Coast except for those that work for government. This event can be connected to the quote because if President Franklin D. Roosevelt took the time to think about the problem he wouldn’t have passed the Order. Simply because Japanese citizens who were taken to the camps lost their liberty and property without due process as required by the Fifth and fourteenth amendment making the order unconstitutional.
If he took the time to think about it he would of came up with a different solution to this problem. (you talk about 9/11 or the cold war) Furthermore the quote “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four of them sharpening my axe”. this quote will make a perfect connection to the novel Lord of the files written by William Golding, the novel is about a group of boy that are on a plane and the plane crash and the boys are stuck on an island. After a couple of days of being stuck on the island that boys started too divided.
Jack became power hungry and wanted to be bossy and in charge or everyone and everything. Over time the boys are becoming savages. One character that stood out was Jack he stands out because he has preparation and also because through the book Jack seems to be the only one that’s prepared for such task and because he has the survive skills that are needed to survive in the positions that’s his in. In chapter mine of the book jack accidentally kills his brother Simon because he mistaken him for a monster that shows how prepared that jack is to defend himself and his crew from anything; just like Abraham jack was prepared.
As an illustration I can make many personal connections to this quote but one of the most important experiences is when I get classwork and homework. i don’t take time to think or brainstorm any ideas about the work is just write the first things that come to mind. But now this year I’ve learn that it’s better to take at least ten to fifteen minutes to brainstorm and come up with ideas because it will make the work much easier because by then I will know and have all the information that I need to complete the assignment.
A good is example is right now before I wrote this essay I spend out 1 hour doing research about history and books that relate to this quote so that I can be prepared and i brainstorm so now it made it easier for me to write this essay. If I didn’t spend time to brainstorm it would took me longer to finish this essay. All in all the entire quote “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four of them sharpening my axe”. Means that everyone should spend more time in preparation because it makes the actual task easier because of preparation.
The quote can be related to the historic event the attack on Pearl Harbor because after that. President Franklin D. Roosevelt passes the executive order 9066 which was unconstitutional because it violated the rights of the Japanese citizens because they lost their liberty without a fair trial. Next this quote can be connected to literature through the novel Lord of the flies By William Golding. This novel relates to the quote because the quote was all about preparation and it seems like most of the characters from lord of the files were prepared for whatever that was happening.
