The modern atomic theory was developed by many scientists, such as Neil Bohr, Democritus, James Chadwick and John Dalton. Each of these intelligent scientists have found different discoveries in their research with the atom. Why has scientific understanding of the atom changed over time? This would be because each scientist has had a different approach and has discovered new understandings from their research. Without these men researching and experimenting, we would not know all of the different aspects of the atom.
John Dalton’s effect on the modern atomic theory was essential because he formulated the first modern description of the atom as the fundamental building blocks of chemical structures. Atoms are known as the basic building blocks…
As he did these extraneous experiments, John Dalton proposed that every chemical element is made of atoms of a single, yet unique type, which cannot be demolished or transformed. In chemical means they cannot be changed although atoms can be combined to create more intricate structures, which are known as chemical compounds. After all of his research and analysis of the results he then concluded that this was the first scientific theory of the atom.
Although John Dalton was the scientist to discover the first scientific theory of an atom, J.J Thomson was next to research the atom. While evaluating Daltons work, he found that atoms are not indivisible. He experimented and found that when the atom is excited by an electrical current it causes the atom to break apart into two parts. Then to further explain his findings, Thomson created a model which was called the Plum-pudding atom. In the model the “plums” are the negatively charged electrons, while the “pudding” is the mass of positive…
Neil Bohr created the planetary model, which had orbits around the nucleus. This was created because Rutherford’s assumption of electrons being in the inside of the atom by the nucleus was incorrect. The electrons are negatively charged while the nucleus was positively charged and opposites attract. Although, these two were not attracting so then Bohr realized that the electrons were on the outside of the nucleus and created a model to display this.
As shown throughout the research, there are many other scientists and chemists who contributed their intelligence into the development of the atomic theory. Each evaluated and revised the atomic theory over the years to incorporate new findings such as, the existence of atomic isotopes and the conversion of mass and energy. Although over several decades many have changed the atomic theory, Dalton still has an impact and his importance is relevant in the development of the atomic…
