New Colony Essay

The Quakers of London came and inherited land between Maryland and New York. When William Penn came to this land, the King named the property after his father, Admiral Sir Penn. In the making of this new colony, there were many steps they had to achieve before they were successful. How did this new colony start out? But, how did this colony use other ideas to help start out? What were the advancements that they were able to make that contributed to the industrialization we have today? Then, who were the people that lead in Pennsylvania’s rise as a colony?

They used a very specific government that helped make Pennsylvania into a large trading center and very foreign place. Explain why today there’s a bunch of culture found in Pennsylvania. When this new colony came into place, there was a certain amount of laws they inherited from other past civilizations that became successful. These ancient civilizations include places like Rome and Athens. These were kind of the foundation that we built upon. The Quakers used past laws and knowledge to help conduct and straighten out the laws and the government of this new property.

With the combination of other civilizations traits and the new religion of the Quakers, they were able to shape their colony and this country today. Besides all of these connections, they were able to make revolutionary products that make up what we use today. When this colony first started out it was like a business. It started out small, and didn’t really get a lot of popularity. After time and many advancements, it was one of the biggest places where you would find different races and cultures of foreign people.

These people include, the English, the Germans, the Scotch-Irish, the African Americans, and Other types of religion and thoughts came to the table during this time(Quaker Province). Philadelphia was actually the biggest place where you would have the biggest foreign trade market in the whole 13 colonies. Being made the 12th colony, we were able to come out on top of all the other colonies. When William Penn made his government, he based it off his new religion, Quakerism, as along with the Roman influences. He claimed that if you went against God, there would be consequences towards you.

So, really in the long if you were able to be good and not against the religion, then you would benefit from it. He believes that “Any government is free to the people” (Penn 1682). In this, William may mean that the people are able to choose from a monarchy, democracy, or an aristocracy. Like today on how we vote for our president, we can either have a republican or a democrat. William used past generations of government to help set a concrete layer of laws so they can build upon them. He used past ideas from the Romans and Athenians.

He took the twelve tables from the Romans, and made it into a constitution. The twelve tables were the Roman Law code, mostly focusing on the Roman values and how they are very loyal to the city of Rome. Also demonstrating that you shouldn’t go against the kingdom. When voting for things we took a very democratic way of running our government. As did the Romans, actually the Roman democratic ideas and the Pennsylvania democratic ideas are very much similar( Roman Influence). When the Romans had their uprising of their empire, they experienced new tasks they had to handle.

Such things like battles, plagues, and other things. So they went through several branches of social class to pick and choose one dictator to rule over the city while the patriarchs figure out what to do. So when Pennsylvania used several legislative branches to pass new laws that they want to have. To ensure that it is the best choice for the people and helps the colony(Roman Influence). In today’s law failed state, we have people who can send a person to jail and for how long. These people are the judges and jury. In Rome, this was very much the same when a rime was committed.

They used the higher up classes like the patriarchs decide whether or not to punish a prisoner. Then we the other part of our foundations. We were connected to Athenian ways and traditions today that we use in government. In Athens, they had slaves who worked for them, when the colony started out. About 10,000 slaves were brought over to Pennsylvania to work for the Quakers. To help with the hard work of farming and other big issues that had to be dealt with. But unlike Athens about 6,500 were freed and were able to do things in the higher classes.

In Athens, we had never ending slavery and they never had rights or freedom( The Quaker Province). In this colony we had many advancements in tools and other resources. In this time our colony had an abundant supply of resources we could use. With these resources we were able to make arts and crafts, sawmills, grist mills, textile production( like woven cloth), shipbuilding because of the Delaware river, Iron, Pig Iron, Printing, Publishing, Paper making, and the making of the long rifle (Quaker Province).

Philadelphia was actually the biggest place where foreign trade was conducted. In Pennsylvania we had the nickname “The Athens of America. ” Meaning they made a rich cultural life, and they gave the freedom of having intellectual and educational institutions and interests of the people. In 1727 man with many advancements, was born. Benjamin Franklin was the proud inventor of many useful products we use every day. He leads the inventions of civic institution’s hospital, paper money, and a postal mail system. This is one of the many people that lead to Pennsylvania’s prosperity.

Ben Franklin used his political leadership to lead to the advancement of independent establishments of governments intended to operate in the best interests of the citizens (Quaker Province). Then we have the famous George Washington who was one of the founding fathers. He leads America to the road of independence, we are in now. Being a trained French and Indian war survivor, he was able to train the Continental army to the best of it’s ability. After the war, we were placed as the first president of the USA. With this he was able to help shape the country to what it is today (Roman Influences: 2017).

These are just two of the people that have helped shape Pennsylvania into what it is. This is how we get our traditions and our way of creating ideas today. Without advancements in technology and our founding fathers help, we wouldn’t have the independence we have today. Without William Penn’s choice in inheriting this piece of land, who knows where we would be today. Also, we used the help of past civilizations to help layer a concrete government where we could build upon it. So, with these important factors combined we got our state Pennsylvania.
