‘Unpack Your Heart’: Song Analysis Essay

I chose this song primarily for the reason that it adequately expresses how I view romantic relationships and what I would aspire to have in a relationship. This song speaks particularly to being open in communication and feelings within a relationship, as well as being comfortable with yourself. Additionally, it addresses to not be ashamed of your past, and to be able to trust that the other person within your relationship will accept you without judgment. I feel that this song promotes a friendship-based relationship, which is the type of relationship that I prefer. Secondly, I am just fond of this song.

Phillip Phillips is an excellent musician and artist, and he has been one of my favorite singer/songwriters for several years. As we all know, he was an American Idol winner. Since his big win, he has released two albums that do not encompass any bad songs, in my opinion. “Unpack Your Heart” in particular has a special place in my heart, for it is a song that a friend and I used during our relationship. During our relationship, we had several instances where we had misunderstandings because we did not understand each other’s feelings and our past experiences with relationships.

The song served has a reminder that we always need to meet in the middle and take the extra time to understand that we have different personalities and that we do not always see things the same way. Though we are not currently identifying as a couple due to big changes in our lives, I know that at least myself, I always think of him when I listen to this song, and think of how much we grew not only as people, but also in our relationship. In the chorus, the lyrics speak to how being open with one another is something that a couple should seek out.

I agree with this concept, because being able to understand each other and where each other’s pasts rest is crucial in being able to advocate for each other through difficult or unfavorable times. The chorus also addresses being true to yourself and that true love does not judge or aim to hurt. Healthy relationships are meant to help two people grow and to become the best people they can be. Every one has something about themselves that they do not like, or are ashamed of. The chorus resonates on the idea that with love, those things do not matter.

In the second verse, the line that says “give me all you hope to receive” is one of my favorite lines in the whole song. I do not think that there is a better way to describe how | approach relationships. However, I tend to be a person that likes to go above and beyond, and I don’t normally expect anything in return. This is just a personal trait of mine, but it is nice to think that someone wants and loves to go out of their way to do something for you without expecting anything in return. Just from personal experience, nothing makes me happier than to make my significant other smile when they least expect it.

The hook that begins with “oh, I’m on your side” is another part of this song that I feel closely relates to how I go about romantic relationships. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. We all need people who will always be on our side, regardless of anything that happens. That does not necessarily mean that they will condone poor behavior, but always knowing that the person will not leave you if you make a mistake is reassuring. It is also important that you support each other in the ups and downs, and to never discourage one another.

Another aspect to this part of the songs that is appealing to me is when the lyrics say “into your darkness, I’ll shine a light. ” This is important to me, because I interpret it as bringing out the best in one another. I believe that the idea of making each other the best you can be can potentially be one of the coolest, most special outcomes or benefits of a relationship. This assignment wasn’t particularly difficult cognitively speaking, but it was challenging to get up to 750 words without sounding epetitive or fabricating thoughts.

When writing, I try to be as concise as possible and that was difficult to do and still get 750 words. Most songs tend to have one idea and dance around that idea with different approaches to that particular thought, so it was challenging to find different ideas to talk about within just one song. Otherwise, I feel that this assignment was fun, because it is not often we get time to sit and listen to a song we enjoy and get to think about it in depth.
