Violence does not only include direct physical contact, but also indirect harm such as psychological damage or property damage. Violence in schools can take many different forms. There are three major types of school violence: student-on-student, student-on-staff, and gang related. Although each type of violence has different characteristics, they all share some common features.
The first common feature is that they usually involve male students. Studies have shown that males are more likely to be involved in violent incidents than females (Fernandez & Roderick, 1993). The second common feature is that violence often occurs in groups. Violence is rarely a single act committed by one individual, but is usually the result of a group of people working together (Fernandez & Roderick, 1993). Finally, most incidents of school violence are premeditated (Fernandez & Roderick, 1993). This means that the perpetrator(s) have planned out their attack ahead of time and often have weapons available to them.
