Argumentative Essay: Should Women Be Paid?

Nervously running her hands through her hair, a woman opens her mouth to speak. Possibly, just possibly, she could get her opinion out this time. However, she’s shushed. Just like every. Other. Time. “Why did I ever think it would work? ” she thought to herself. What she had to say had been much more important than any of the foolish things the men were arguing about, but they continue, oblivious to the fact that she’d wanted to say something. Looking for help from the other women, they all look-down, ashamed they aren’t able to do anything. They’ve all only been told their whole lives that they’d never be as smart, ood, or strong as a man.

That they should stay quiet, and respect their husbands who do oh-so-much for them. That man is doing them a favor. Imagine being treated as inferiors. Imagine being told that you are not as good as someone else just because you are a certain gender. How would you feel? Upset? Sad? Angry? Would you stand up to this injustice? Well, back in the mid-19th century, a woman couldn’t speak her mind if a man didn’t like her opinion. A woman was expected to stay at home, take care of the house and watch the children, regardless of what she thought about it.

What if I told you a orm of this continues to go on today? Sometimes, women are not even paid as much as men or are seen as less intelligent compared to a man. My opinion is that women’s suffrage was a terrible injustice in our history, and should not continue to repeat itself, even in a different form, today. By saying that women are inferior to a man does not get our country anywhere, nor does anything to help. Did you know that women only earned the right to vote a hundred years ago? Women’s inequality shouldn’t go on today because it is unfair to the women who work hard only to get paid less.

Also, by not addressing women’s inequality you are continuing to let many women face being discriminated against. And lastly, by not respecting women as much as men you are going to live in a country ruled just by men. Do you really want to be one of the people that stop others from achieving their dreams? My first reason why women’s inequality shouldn’t continue is that it is unfair to the women who work really hard for their pay but are paid less or addressed as a lower title. In fact, according to the article For U. S. Women, Inequality Takes Many Forms, by Ariel

Smilowitz, “In just about every state in the country, Millennial women are more likely than Millennial men to have a college degree, yet Millennial women also have higher poverty rates and lower earnings than Millennial men. ” That means that even though more women are educated, fewer earn the same amount as men. Women who work hard and yet aren’t paid the same amount as men could possibly be forced into poverty. If more women are paid less and have little money to provide for themselves and/or their families, countries will only get poorer. However, isn’t the goal to be a richer country, not a poorer one?

Back when women didn’t even have the right to vote, they had to do everything their husband told them to and most likely didn’t own a penny except what their husband made. Do we really want to go back to that time, when a woman needed a man to live? The second reason that I believe women’s inequality should stop is because you continue to keep the women of our country subject to facing discrimination. Today, it is highly possible that if two people applying for the same job but one is a woman and one is a man, the man might get the job simply because he is a man.

In fact, according to the article Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Are Key to Addressing Global Poverty, “Any poverty agenda must focus on women because they are 70 percent of the world’s poor. ” Now, that means that women make up almost 4 of the world’s poor. That is more than half of the amount of women who are in poverty. Women’s inequality is a form of discrimination against women in this way. In the United States of America as well. But what about the ‘American Dream’? The idea that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard ork, determination, and initiative?

Some women work just as hard as their male co-workers but are continued to be paid less in the US, and pretty much everywhere for that matter. Now, I’m not saying that if these women were paid the same amount as men this population would immediately evaporate, but if they were to be paid the same amount as men or were given a chance to be looked at from under the surface of, “you’re a woman not a man,” then it’s highly possible that this percentage would decrease. My last reason why women’s inequality should cease to continue is that you’re basically un-educating women. Why?

Because women have definitely come a very long way since the 19th century. For example, they fought for the right to vote, the right to be able to work if they were pregnant, and they fought for what they believed in. In fact, according to 5 Facts of the History of Women’s Rights by Maria Rainier, “On June 10 of the same year, 1963, the Equal Pay Act was passed by Congress, which made it illegal for women to receive less than a man for the same job. However, the Court of Appeals later ruled in 1972 that men and women should have “substantially equal” pay, instead of identical.

This means that at one point, women ought hard enough to get this act passed however it was subsequently taken away. I know you could argue that some women are doing very well. The CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, does very well. For example, her salary is $117 million over 5 years. Imagine what you could do with that kind of money. But did you also know that % of the global illiterate population are women? That’s not something you can look at and say that’s just too bad. Having smarter people in the world is important for the future. If that population is mostly women, there is a reason behind it.

If women were respected just as much as en, then that could be highly possible. In conclusion, I believe that women’s inequality is unfair and should cease immediately. If we want the world we’re living in to be ruled by one gender, we’ll just make our world poorer, not richer. Also, we want to make sure that women are allowed to do what they want. We definitely don’t want it to be acceptable for any gender or anyone to be discriminated against. And lastly, everyone should be able to follow their dreams no matter what gender they are. It wouldn’t be fair if it wasn’t that way. So, that’s why I believe women’s inequality should be stopped.
