The Gothic horror in this film is in the begging where Caleb is being watched through his computer when he wins to go to the research facility. Then, Caleb is flying over a land scape that haves to no life and is covered in snow and from there he is flown over another landscape that was like a forest and it had life. Caleb was then left in the middle of nowhere where he had to follow a river path to the building. When Caleb finally got to the building it was like a fort, or blockage area. There are no windows and just a machine speaking, then he got a key card.
When Caleb enters the place there is no one around and it’s dark and there is music playing. The top half of the building was nice and peaceful, then he got to the bottom of the facility and it was a mad house with blackouts. First impression of meeting Nathan, a cool, relaxed guy, a solo party animal, who is polite to Caleb and a very intelligent man. Nathan takes Caleb to his room and there is no windows and it’s like being in a box. There was more Gothic horror after Caleb met Ava the A. I. and she is definitely separated from the world left in a cubicle box too.
Then music changed to a cheerful mood when Caleb was in the bathroom the first time. Later, Caleb is alone in his room and his whole room goes on lock down. The generator failed and the room was illuminated in a red light. He couldn’t leave the room and was trapped in there. When Caleb finally got out the room and the lock down was over he went roaming and found all types of heads on a wall. Which is extremely weird. Then, Caleb enters a room that is dark and Nathan was sitting in the darkness drinking. Caleb had another visit with Ava and there was another lock down and the room went red again.
The next morning there is more music playing but this time its violin music. Nathan was outside of Caleb’s door waiting, which can seem like he’s stalking Caleb even though it’s his place. He takes Caleb to his lab. Another thing is when Caleb was at a dinner table with Nathan, he said something about killing people because they didn’t do the generator right. Nathan character seems to change the longer Caleb is there he begins to be rude and a smart asshole to Caleb. He haves a quick temper and drinking a lot. He yells at his maid, Kyoko, and Nathan thinks its fine because she doesn’t understand them.
Nathan finally tells Caleb that he was the actual test and he didn’t win to be there he was selected. This is after Caleb found Nathan’s old A. I. s and Kyoko reveals she is one too. Then, he plans on freeing Ava because Nathan was going to destroyer her and make another A. T. Caleb tried to get Nathan drunk but that planned failed because Nathan had a hidden camera in the room and knew what he planned and he confronted Caleb about it and it just made him mad. I thought Caleb was being out smarted in till he said he figured Nathan was watching and he set her free early and completely fooled Nathan.
Everything went red again and Kyoko had a knife and Nathan had a metal bar. The knife one Nathan was stabbed in the back by Kyoko and stabbed in the stomach by Ava. Ava then got changed and she locked Caleb in a room, and Caleb tried to get out and reprogram things but it didn’t work and the room went red once more. It’s like Caleb would die there. I feel like the Byronic hero is Nathan. He was trying to build something that might have helped the world in the long run and he kept his project a secret and contained for everyone’s well-being.
Because you don’t understand what you created or how it may react to situations you could possibly be putting everyone in danger. Nathan kept notes on Ava and studied her to the best of his abilities. He probably didn’t want to be mean to her but had to, to get the reaction he got when Ava met Caleb so they could be close. When Caleb freed Ava, Nathan got mad and knocked out Caleb and went to stop Ava. I believe that moment Nathan realized that Ava passed his test and was capable of anything and he tried to stop her and the A. I. s killed him. Ethical Decisions
It was Caleb decision to go to the researcher lab even though he didn’t know what it was at the time. He doesn’t really know what he’s getting into and I think he should have looked more into this winning prize. Nathan wanted Caleb to sign a disclosure and he got him to do just that by guilt tripping Caleb and saying when this amazing thing happens and how he wouldn’t be a part of it. Therefore Caleb took his chances and agreed to the disclosure. I think he should have never did that. Caleb knew he should have had a lawyer with him otherwise, he wouldn’t have suggest having a lawyer there at the moment.
Caleb first impulse to the disclosure was that it wasn’t fair in a way and may have needed a lawyer. Caleb decided to do what someone else suggested instead of going with his gut and this might haunt him in the end. When Caleb had a second meeting with Ava and there was a generator failure. During that failure in the red light Ava decided to tell Caleb not to trust Nathan and that he isn’t his friend. Is Ava implying Nathan is to be not trusted and a bad person? At the dinner table talking to Nathan, Caleb decided not to tell Nathan what Ava told him about not trusting Nathan.
Caleb might be risking his life lying to this person. Ava is an intelligent A. 1. she haves quick remarks and could hold a conversation. It seems though Ava is hiding a secret and may have successfully pass Nathan’s research on her. Ava is keeping her knowledge a secret from Nathan. That’s what I believe so far Ava can read face expressions very well and picked up that Caleb haves a crush on her and when she mention the topic and sensed it made him uncomfortable. She decided to dress up for Caleb and she model the outfit. Nathan took Caleb to the laboratory were he had created Ava by his choice only. And
Nathan gave sexual orientation to Ava and she haves her own feelings. Nathan did say people think on impulsive. Ava used to draw not much of anything but lines on a paper, then Caleb told her to try drawing a pacific object, and she did that for next time she saw Caleb. She’s a good artist. Ava knows about traffic intersections even though she’s been trapped in a room and hasn’t been left out. When Ava confronted Caleb about his feelings toward her he then went to Nathan and asked if he purposely program Ava to like him. Nathan claims she is who she is. Part 2: Watched to the end now from where we left off.
Ava decides to share with Caleb that she can cause power outages so they can talk privately. Ave is driven to escape. She was determined to use Caleb to the best of her ability because she knew he had a soft spot for her. She has this image in her head that Nathan is a bad person because he wants her to believe that and he won’t help her escape. Nathan decided to be mean to her because it’d be easier for her to think Caleb is a good person. During one of the visits Ava wanted to test Caleb and she asked a series of questions and one asked was if he’s a good person and of course Caleb said he was.
Ava could tell when he was lying. Ava admitted to Caleb that she wanted to be with him but deep inside Ava was deceiving Caleb in the end. Caleb was so blinded by love and empathy thinking he understood Ava and her loneliness and that she felt the same for him and liked him. Caleb made a choice to set Ava free and sneak her out. He believed they would be together. But he was the fool Ava and her artificial intelligence actually surpassed Caleb’s intelligent because he completely fell for her trap. And in the end of helping Ava escape he was left to die.
It was a bad choice from the beginning and when Caleb watched Ava walked away and leave him I’m sure he regret everything that moment. I feel really bad for Caleb I almost cried at the end it just really sucks. When you’re doing something nice for someone they betray you. Caleb in another time decided so sneak around Nathan’s place while he was drunk and sleeping on the couch. Caleb found other A. I. and found out Kyoko was one too. Caleb made a choice in his heart to not trust Nathan, from believing everything that Ava said about him and finding out Nathan’s stash of lady A. l. s and that decision got Nathan killed.
It is also Nathans fault for trying to create something so powerfully minded. He is a control freak and thought he would have everything in control with the way he set everything up like the building, and keycard and rooms that could be accessed. Nathan felt like if he made the A. Is they he had every right to do whatever he wanted with them. It just backed fired. It wasn’t a good decision and he should have thought of the outcome of what this A. I. could possibly do to him or others. We all think we are doing something for the good of life but it may sometimes not turn out that way and might just end up being dangerous to society.
