Thesis: For one to live a happy life they need to live without certain items, as they cause them to not achieve happiness due to the distractions from these items and receive an overload of information, thus causing stress. Introduction: When I was younger, I always wanted a Barbie dollhouse. The Barbie dollhouse was expensive and at least worth a hundred dollars. For my birthday, my parents decided to give me that very Barbie dollhouse. Of course, I was happy but I was only happy for a quick minute and before I knew it, I didn’t know what item I wanted next.
This is a situation that many people this day in age face, where they receive something and they don’t know what to do. But, these possessions also have a negative impact on people. The negative impact inhibits them to achieve true happiness. For one to live a happy life they need to live without some items, as the items causes them to live an unhappier life due to the distractions and these items cause them to receive an overload of information and become stressed out.
Body Paragraph #1: People become distracted from these items, such as technology, leading them to live an unhappy life. These distractions have a negative impact on people and the impact disallows them to live the happy life they desired. From “6 Ways Your Phone is Hurting Your Health and Happiness”, the article discusses the reasons why having a phone causes a negative impact in one’s life. The possession of a phone overall decreases one’s health by causing the lack of sleep, “… the blue light emitted from electronics, like laptops and cell phones, can have terrible effect on our leep… plus the constant pings, buzzing, and light from incoming texts and emails can hurt our sleep patterns. ” (“6 Ways Your Phone is Hurting Your Health and Happiness”). Phones distract them from obtaining the necessary sleep needed for their health. Without the proper sleep, a person will become cranky and sleep deprived causing them to be unhappy in life. Furthermore, in “Andrew Weil’s Spontaneous Happiness:Our Nature-Deficit Disorder” by Andrew Weil, it talks about our brains are just not equipped for this modern day in age.
All the new technology coming out provides new forms of entertainment that isn’t necessarily for the better, “Many people today spend much of their waking time surfing the Internet, texting, and talking on mobile phones, attending to email, watching television, and being stimulated by other new mediaexperiences never available until now… the allure of synthetic entertainment… ” (Andrew Weil). The new technology causes people to get trapped into the concept of technology. They are trapped into this idea that technology is the greatest form of entertainment, even though it’s fake entertainment and spending hours within technology.
This causes people to not feel or see true happiness since they’re trapped in a world of fake happiness. Items, such as technology leads people to not live a happy life since they’re constantly distracted and not being able to see true happiness. Body Paragraph #2: Additionally, an overload of information is brought by these items leading to a stressful and unhappy life. The high amount of information that is brought by these items causes high levels of stress. In ‘Wifi in the Woods” by Micah Baird discusses the fact that many outdoor, public areas are starting to provide wifi within the locations.
Paul D. Miller, a DJ is surrounded by technology everyday due to his job. When he is in the face of nature he opens up his eyes on the effect of technology, “We’re going into information overload, when there’s too much of everything all the time… ” (Micah Baird). The new technology is causing an information overload as it is around us everyday. This leads people to become stressed out since they are unable to understand the concept. When people are spending time constantly around the technology, this leads to a high stress level and for people to slowly become unhappy.
Also from “Andrew Weil’s Spontaneous Happiness: Our Nature-Deficit Disorder”, human brains are not equipped for this modern age filled with technology and the negative impact of it, “Our brains, generally adapted to help us negotiate a successful course through complex, changing, and often hazardous environments, are suddenly confronted with an overload of information…. “(Andrew Weil). Human brains can adapt the complex and dangerous activities but they are unable to deal with an overload of information.
The overload of information might not seem hazardous, but it is since you are faced with not being able to complete your work due to it. The human brain is unfit and unable to adapt to this, which makes people at risk to become unhappy since they are unable to process anything. These items are causing an information overload to people and causing them to be unable to achieve happiness. Conclusion: In order to be happy, people have to live without some items since the items cause them to become distracted and stressed out. In today’s society, items such as technology is taking over people’s lives and this has a negative impact within them.
People are getting distracted and stressed out, thus causing them to not achieve happiness. When people are unable to achieve happiness, it not only affects them but the people around them. Living off without certain possessions, allow people to live a happier life and that allows the people they surround themselves with to also be happier. Everyone deserves to be happy and people can accomplish this by not having items such as technology. If everyone continues to live unhappy lives, this will cause people to not live like humans, but robots instead.
