It was the night before Halloween and a 10 year old girl who had long brown hair and pretty blue eyes lived in a little town west of Cleveland, Ohio in the year of 2006 and she was trying on her new Halloween costume. She had best friends named Emma and Jack, who are twins, and were both three months younger than her. They had jet black hair and brown eyes and they were going to trick or treat with her at exactly 9:00 tomorrow night. Amanda was going as a graceful moon princess, Emma was going as a beautiful star fairy, and Jack was going as a brave black lion.
Earlier that day they met in Amanda’s kitchen and they had planned out their trick or treating rout, first they would go to their neighbors the Petersons, next they would go to their friend Eva’s house and then the rest of the neighborhood. Emma had said, “Let’s go down to Mr. Barley’s house too! ” Then Amanda had said, “Are you CRAZY Mr. Barley hates kids! ” Next Emma said, “Why do you always have it your way! ” Suddenly there was a cold wind that blew and Amanda fell over, then Emma said, “Amanda, Jack are you guys ok. ”
Then Amanda said, “Yes, I’m ok, but what was that? Then Amanda saw a faint white ghost just as she got to her feet and she almost screamed, but she didn’t. Finally Jack said, “Emma’s right, so it’s settled that we will go down to Mr. Barley’s house. ” But Amanda still wasn’t sure what had hit her. This year would be very different since this was the first year all of them would be going trick or treating without adult supervision, Amanda was so scared! It was 10:00 now and Amanda decided that she should text Emma, she said, “What do you think about trick or treating without our moms this year? Then Emma said, “I LOVE the idea! ” Next Amanda said, “Well I don’t. ” Finally Emma said, “We’ll talk about it at school tomorrow. ”
So Amanda said, “OK” Just then Amanda’s mom came in and said, “Lights out! ” It was 10:30, so Amanda got her PJ’s on and went to bed. The next day Amanda woke up at 6:00 so she could think about what to do to be safe even though there were going to be no adults watching them. Later she got some clothes on and went down to eat some breakfast, then she brushed her teeth and went to school.
Tonight it was going to be Halloween and now she was comfortable about going without her mom. At school Amanda told Emma she felt better about Halloween night tonight. As the day went on it was almost 7:30, just an hour and a half more and they would be of trick or treating. One hour and a half later they all met at Emma and Jack’s house to go trick or treating. They were all in their costumes and ready to go when suddenly another cold wind blew and this time all three of them fell down. This time Amanda, Emma and Jack all saw a ghost, and all of them screamed!
Then the ghost acculy went through them! They all ran screaming, “A GHOST! ”, “A GHOST! ” Then their friend Eva shouted, “Are you ok! ” Finally Emma said, “We should probably get going since it’s already 9:15. One hour later they had gone to every house on their very long street (even their local church’s Harv-o-ween) except Mr. Barley’s house.
When they ran up their street to Mr. Barley’s house Amanda shouted, “I don’t think this is good idea! ” When she caught up with them Jack said, “Well we all agreed to go to Mr. Barley’s house tonight, think of it as an adventure! Next Emma said, “Like the adventure of the ghost! ” So Amanda muttered, “Well I think his house is spooky and it looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in years and I hear that there are ghosts there! ” Then Jack said, “I heard that! ” When they arrived at the house Amanda rang the doorbell, when Emma screamed, “A GHOST! ” and she ran as fast as lightning away from the house. Jack said, “I know she’ll come back, but why is there a ghost at the door! ” and he ran off too .
But Amanda stayed calm and said to the ghost, “Who are you. ( as she peered in the giant house seeing about twenty ghosts) and the ghost said softly, “I am Severous, the leader of the ghosts. ” Severous was a long white ghost, with glittering eyes and spoke as softly as velvet. Amanda wondered why she was so scared before and why her friends were so afraid. Suddenly Mr. Barley came to the door and yelled, “WHY ARE YOU HERE! ” and Severous flew away. So Amanda ran off too, and left her candy bag for the ghosts. The next day was Sunday and Amanda slept in, when her phone started to ring.
When she answered it Emma started yelling, “What will we do! ” and “We have to stop those ghosts! ” and “What will we do! ” Then Amanda said, “I really don’t know what to do, since I feel like if we kill the ghosts we could actually destroy Mr. Barley’s life. Since maybe he’s you know, attached to them. ” Then Emma shouted, “Are you crazy, do you really care for those ghosts! ” Next Amanda said, “Yes! ” and so Amanda, Emma and Jack agreed the very next day that they would leave the ghosts alone forever, or at least until they really understood what happened that night!
