Essay about Short Story Mother Knows Best

Bronwen Clark 7-2 Mother Knows Best? (a twisted Rapunzel story) Once upon a time, there was a lonely, sad old woman called Samella Herkins. She had a rough past, as her husband, and her baby were taken by raiders, along with all her money. Since she didn’t have anything to live on anymore, she became hungry and resorted to stealing goods from the village around her. One day,she broke into a house that was small and dirty, she knew the people living there had gone off to the town’s festival for a day so she had taken her chance. As she was rummaging through the old shack, she found a box labeled “Savings” on it in big black writing.

She took the lid off the box to see a couple shiny gold coins glimmering in the little sunlight that was coming into the house. As she pocketed the coins, she headed out, as she realized the family was poor and had little more than her, then all a sudden she heard a voice “Hello? ” the voice said shakily, “Who’s there…. show yourself” Samella shouted darting her eyes around the small room. Then, she saw a figure emerging from the darkness, it was a woman, like herself holding a beautiful baby, with golden hair that was so shiny that it looked that it had been dipped in pure gold. PPPPlease… I know what you took.

That was all my life savings and I beg you, please…. return them. ” the woman said in a shaky voice “And why would I do that? ” She answered while crossing her arms “I will give you anything! Anything that you want… ppplease just give me back the gold coins”The woman stuttered. “Ummm.. ” Samella wondered Why anyone would trade a couple of lousy, rusty, gold coins for anything they have! She thought “Okay… ” Samella thought back to the day she realized she had lost everything. “Hand me your baby! ” “No, I would never do that!

Never in a million years! “Racked with jealousy,Samella grabbed the baby anyways and ran away with the gold coins still in her pocket, leaving the mother stunned and shocked. .As she ran,she came across a dark dungeon in a clearing. She decided that that’s where her and “her” new baby would live. It was now 15 years later, and the girl who was once a baby, had grown into a beautiful young adult, named Rapunzel. Since Samella had spent the gold coins that she had stolen on food, she used Rapunzel’s unusual and striking golden hair to show her off at local fairs.

Her hair had never been cut and by the time she was only 12, it already ran from her head to her feet. The fairs were the only way that Rapunzel could get out of the dungeon, as Samella didn’t want anything happening to her. One warm summers day, Rapunzel was getting ready to perform when a ragged looking woman came up to her. The woman looked in awe at Rapunzel and said “Apart from my daughter, who was stolen from my arms around 15 years ago, I’ve never seen hair as golden as yours. Rapunzel looked into the woman’s eyes, even after all her hardship, Rapunzel could tell, that the woman meant no harm. “Your eyes.. ” Rapunzel said “They’re.. just like mine”. “So, you’ve figured it out” a voice said behind Rapunzel. She turned around, only to see Samella. “She’s mine, you’re never going to take her away! ” Rapunzel looked into her true mother’s eyes and smiled. She stood up and took her hand.

They started to walk away from Samella and Rapunzel said, “I’m not your meal ticket, you’ve used me and my hair for long enough! Samella was furious, she grabbed a pair of scissors and Rapunzel’s hair and chopped it off! Rapunzel and her mom stood in stunned silence as the golden hair fell away from her head. “Why would you do that? ” sobbed Rapunzel “Why is your heart so cold and bitter? ” For the first time since her own family had been stolen from her, Samella suddenly, realised all the evil she had done. A wave of guilt and shame came over her and, tears started to well up in her eyes. “I……. I’m so sorry,” she cried. “I lost everything I owned and all my family.

They were all stolen from me. I didn’t know how to survive so my heart was hardened and my deeds became more and more wicked. ” Rapunzel and her birth mother looked at each other and knew straight away that they both forgave Samella and her evil ways. “I know your family and possessions were stolen from you,” said Rapunzel. “But you must come and live with us! ” So that was just what Samella did. She stopped allowing jealousy and hatefulness rule her heart and instead let love and compassion be her guide. And they all lived happily ever after!
