– One of the main characters in the novel. He has many characteristics such as being very athletic, charismatic, leading, and a smart protagonist of the group of kids. Ralph was elected the leader of the boys at the beginning of the book. While most of the other boys are mainly concerned with having fun and not doing any work, Ralph focuses on building huts and thinking of ways to increase their chances of being rescued. Ralph’s influence over the other boys is safe at the beginning of the novel.
Eventually, most of the boys except for his close friend Piggy leave Ralph’s group for the antagonist Jack, and Ralph is left alone with piggy to be hunted by Jack’s large group. Jack -One of the main characters in the story and also the antagonist to Ralph. Jacks a very smart, evil, violent, and cruel leader who uses power to get what he desires. At the beginning of the story ralph and jacks hold an election to see who will be the leader to try and get them off the island. He is furious when he ends up losing the election to Ralph. The first time he encounters a pig, he wasn’t able to kill it.
But Jack soon becomes obsessed with hunting and devotes himself to it, painting his face like a barbarian. The more fearful Jack becomes, the more he’s able to control the rest of the group. Throughout the story, his group against Ralphs fight for survival as the Great War between them has only begun. Setting – The novel Lord of the Flies takes place on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean. It’s also during an unknown during a fictional atomic war. On the south side of the island there is a beach where the boys spend most of their time at for a little while.
Towards the middle of the island there is where a plane crash site is. Right to the west is a pig run where they get their meat from so they can survive. Lastly at the very peek north on the island there is a gigantic rigid mountain that plays a big part in the story. The island starts out on the beach where the boys are stranded and are thinking of a way to get rescued and to also find all the other lost boys who had crashed with them as well. Ralph and piggy find a conch shell which the blow and all the lost kids find their way to them.
They build a civilization in which they all live in and explore the island to find places for resources such as food, water, and shelter. The whole group ends up going into the mountain to look for a beast and Jack then declares himself leader even though Ralph already is. That starts a problem between the characters in the story so they end up with two groups. Jacks group takes the mountains and ralphs takes the beach as their war starts. Conflict There are lots of conflicts in the Lord of the Flies. One is character vs character.

The surroundings played a great conflict between everyone and cause great problems. Water displacement Water displacement is a big key in my book because it’s how the kids got stranded on the island. In my opinion it’s a big part of any book because it’s what allows anything to float on water. Water displacement has many important effects. One of these important affects is buoyancy.
This is the reason why objects like boats or objects such as surf boards float in water. When an object displaces water, the water is trying for a lower position to hold up the object. Since both the object and the water are subjected to gravity. If the overall density of the object is greater than the waters, it sinks. If the overall density of the water is greater than the objects, it floats. An object sinking in water undergoes gravitational acceleration like any other object as if it weighed only as much as the difference between its own weight and the weight of water it displaces in.
Combined with the friction from water, it makes many objects sink slowly in water. An example of water displacement could be a paper boat floating on water. Since the density of the boat is less than the water, the boat will continue to stay afloat unless more weight is applied which would cause more density which therefore would 3 OF 5 make the boat sink rather than float. The first person to come up with the idea of water displacement was a man named Archimedes. His theory stated that any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.
In summary, the Archimedes’ principle allows the buoyancy of an object partially or fully immersed in a liquid to be calculated. The downward force that acts on the object is gravity and the objects own weight. Water displacement wasn’t just one day found out it took someone to realize what was really happening and that person was Archimedes. Archimedes was an ancient philosopher, inventor, astronomer, engineer, and one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. One day Archimedes was told to be the king to determine the volume of a new crown that had been made for King Hiero II.
He was asked to make sure it was made from solid gold and did not contain any imperfect materials such as silver or possibly fool’s gold by the goldsmith who created it. The crown was in an irregular shape and one whose volume could not be easily measured by traditional means. Archimedes was confused on how to solve the problem without damaging the crown. One day while taking a bath Archimedes noticed that the water level rose when he got in the bathtub and lowered back to its original level when he got out of the bathtub.
He realized that this effect could be used to determine the volume of the crown. When submerged in water, the crown would displace water that was equal to its volume. The density could be calculated by dividing the weight of the crown by the volume of water. Archimedes found out he could then determine if the density was lower than that of solid gold, which would occur if cheaper quality metals were used. Without this discovery water displacement may not be defined to this day.
